WEATHER WARNING - ANIMAL WELFARE

Humid and warm weather is forecast for Ireland for the latter half of this week, conditions which pose a significant risk to the welfare of livestock in vehicles.
β€’ Temperatures will reach up to 28˚C over the next seven days.
β€’ Humidity greatly increases the ill-effects of heat, as animals’ ability to control their body temperature is weakened.
β€’ Both temperature and humidity are typically higher within lorries that are loaded with livestock, than outside the lorry; both parameters rise sharply when the vehicle is not moving.
β€’ Attention should be given to ventilation, particularly with pigs travelling for slaughter.
β€’ Animals should never be left unattended in stationary vehicles. Ensure fans are turned on at all times.
