Training Sens: Dog Training & Handler Coaching No-nonsense virtual and in-person training for the dog in front of you! IT ALL BEGINS WITH THAT ONE SPECIAL DOG WHO TURNS YOUR LIFE UPSIDE DOWN.

Training Sens is a platform inspired by the relationship formed between my staffy mix (Sinsemilla Crow a.k.a. Sensi) and me (Chi). I rehomed Sensi when he was 3.5 years (née 2016) and at that time, he did not respond consistently to his name, was severely dog-reactive, and clearly had no formal training. I realised very quickly that in order to meet his needs, I’d really have to buckle down and le

arn more about dog training and canine behaviour. In the process of learning how to help him manage the challenges he faces as a high-drive/reactive pup, and also create a foundation for him that would enable us to live a full and adventurous life, I discovered that I enjoyed dog training and more so, handler coaching, which is more explicitly what I do. I know how tough it can be to navigate the vast amount of misinformation and highly-opinionated ideologies/practices in the dog training industry. My goal is to break it all down in a way that empowers you to decide how best to make informed decisions for your dog. I work to create a space whereby we keep an open mind, continuously improve through questioning everything with kindness, and use candor to provide feedback. This ensures I do what works best for the dog and handler in front of me.

- How to manage distractions and arousal levels
- Better timing and how to use rewards effectively
- How to encourage your dog to check in with you automatically

WHAT TO EXPECT

- Located in 13 ker. (closest stop is Dozsa György M3)
- Starting in May; day/time TBD based on participants

This is another low energy but mentally challenging game suitable for any dog and accessible to one recovering from injury!

So much of training really comes down to being really patient and really consistent. It’s practicing the same patterns over and over until they’re coded into your dog’s memory and they just know what to do.

This is a progress of the staring game I do with Ago but I then progress it to reverse luring or food refusal which is that the secret to unlocking the food isn’t actually by trying to grab it and instead to check in with my and wait for the cue. This is a building block to getting to a place where your dog doesn’t eat anything and everything that it sees and doesn’t rush you for a food bowl.

Note: there are many ways to train for this…this is just one approach and again, a low energy yet mental thinking activity which is great for a dog with limited mobility as well as a puppy who needs to learn to stop and process the world!

Dogs and puppies are a lot smarter than most people give them credit for!

- Only words used are Ago, Kosár, and Azaz
- Background vocals lovingly provided by Sensi 🤣
- Video is 2x speed so this was short and sweet (2 minutes of practice!). Also note that this is the first time we have formally practiced this exercise.
- The fact that Ago is building such a positive association this early on with wearables means less stress with anything that goes over or around his head and neck in the future. It’s also always better to work cooperatively with your dog as opposed to waiting until an experience has to be forced!

Learning impulse control around thresholds is an incredibly useful skill for a dog to have to ensure they don’t rush out into dangerous situations. In this exercise, I want Ago to learn that just because a door is open does not mean he runs through it!

This is a great exercise to work on as it gets him really thinking and using his brain, it’s a low energy exercise which is perfect given he has limited mobility, and it’s a life skill for him to use moving forward.

Please note that in this video, I’m not really saying anything to him except for marking and rewarding when he stays put after the door is opened (azaz), and then a release cue when his is finally allowed out of the crate (mehetsz). I am also maintaining calm energy as this is a low intensity activity and I want him to mirror that.

These sessions lasted a matter of minutes each time. They are bite size practices done throughout the day, not long drawn out lectures!

Ago is an incredibly smart cookie and within a handful of practice sessions, he understood the assignment.

Crate and Rotate

It can be tricky introducing new dogs into your household. While Sensi has dog friends and we dogsit from time to time, this was the first time we brought in what was effectively a new dog to our home with him.

How did we do it?

1. We didn’t start introductions as home, we started them outside in a neutral place with Ago’s previous fosterer on a parallel walk. This gave both dogs a chance to “meet” each other without the need for a forced interaction.

2. When Ago arrived, we started his arrival with yet another parallel walk around the block. This allowed Sensi to see Ago being handled by someone in his “pack” and understand that we are ok with this new dog

3. In the home, each dog had their own safe space where they can go to when they need a break. Luckily, they are comfortable being kept in the same room

4. Each dog gets a turn to be out and about at intervals throughout the day. They learn to respect the personal space of the other dog safely and also get a chance to observe and get to know the dog. This also gives us a chance to work on our relationship with Ago first, which is more important in my opinion than if he and my dog are best friends. Once Ago and I have a relationship and common vocabulary, it will be easier to communicate with him, build his confidence and trust in us (and his new environment) and shape the behaviours he will need to thrive in our home and his future home.

Every dog doesn’t necessarily need this gentle of an introduction but we knew ours did and in truth, most dogs (especially rescues) WOULD benefit from slow and steady chances to integrate into their new homes. This is doubly the case as Ago is injured and so is feeling extra vulnerable right now on top of being in a completely new home.

Thus far though, this system has worked very well for us. Both dogs are happy and learning about each other, they’re safe, and their needs are being met which is exactly what we want to see!

I love playing patterns games. Just like with us human folk, dogs learn quite a bit through play!

I like this game because it teaches the handler timing, capturing behaviours, and positioning of rewards. Dogs learn even more from it and it’s such an easy and accessible place to start with a new dog! Another additional plus for us is it does not require a lot of movement which is perfect for a dog in recovery🤕 and a sick handler 🤧 while still providing a stimulating and enriching challenge to the dog.

This is the second time I’ve playing this with Ago and you can already see he’s starting to understand the assignment!

We had a great first day settling Ago in. Here are a few highlights.

First and foremost, we wanted to make sure that Ago had enough quiet time to absorb, settle in and just exist in his new environment. Along the way, I’ve already started to learn so much about this smart little nugget!

He’s picking up well on his new routine and is such a lovely puppy!
