CavalloSana Dentistry represented by Sara Lolić, dr.vet.med., MANZCVS (Equine dentistry) provides a whole horse approach to equine dentistry and overall health of horses. Sara graduated from the Veterinary Faculty University of Ljubljana in 2012, following which she spent two years in rotating internships in Ireland and Belgium. There she discovered her passion for internal medicine and dentistry

and pursued further continuing professional development in these fields, while returning back to Slovenia and later to Croatia. In 2022 she successfully passed exams in equine dentistry obtaining Membership status of the prestigious Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists, thus becoming the first veterinarian in both Croatia and Slovenia to obtain this qualification. Apart from veterinary work Sara also enjoys holding seminars and webinars for owners and most recently for veterinarians. CavalloSana Dentistry promotes preventative measures as pillars of good health for our beloved equine companions. With booking a dental exam you provide your horse with:

> a relaxed and safe approach
> a full body clinical exam
> counselling depending on findings or owner concerns
> advising on other preventative measures (deworming, vaccinations, ...)
> gentle, fear-free approach (especially appreciated by needle-shy horses)
> detailed dental exam following newest veterinary standards
> dental equilibration/odontoplasty
> if necessary referral for advanced procedures

Equine odontoclastic tooth resorption with hypercementosis (EOTRH) is a painful and progressive dental disease in horses that causes the part of the tooth below the gum line to be resorbed by the body.

Not all horses suffer from EOTRH, and the condition is mainly found in older horses, affecting an estimated 25–30% of horses over the age of 25.

Clinical signs of EOTRH include excessive plaque buildup around incisor or canine teeth, mouth pain, broken teeth, pustules in the gums, and aversion to haltering or bridling. If you notice these signs in your senior horse, contact your veterinarian for an examination. Treatment for this condition involves surgically removing affected teeth.

After every dental exam 🦷, I make sure to include an examination of the "boy's parts", clean if necessary and offer advice for further care. 💙

Young horses develop sharp enamel points as their deciduous (baby) teeth , and then permanent teeth, erupt and come into wear.

Before the age of five, they will shed up to 24 deciduous teeth as the permanent teeth come through.

This stage often coincides with the introduction of bitting and early ridden work, where any discomfort in the mouth may affect acceptance of the bit and behaviour.

Regular dental examinations by a qualified Equine Dental Technician will ensure their mouth is comfortable, supporting a positive start to their ridden career.

How old was your horse when they had their first dental check? 🦷🔎
