From time to time stray cats turn up at Maria’s, practically asking for help. The feral mother of these kittens is living in the area around Maria’s home, amongst the enclosures. Maria is going to trap mom and get her spayed.

It’s peak kitten season at the moment and it’s a nightmare. Kittens and mothers (many of whom are sick) everywhere and hardly any space. The situation is completely unmanageable and overwhelming. Only sterilising cats will truly solve the crisis in the long run.

PLEASE, PLEASE do not take kittens away from their mothers.

They MUST be kept together AND taken together. If needed, mother cats should be trapped and sterilised before being returned (when kittens are weaned). It really is no use just mindlessly taking kittens and returning them, especially when the mother is nowhere to be found.

There are some exceptions of course - if a kitten is gravely unwell and the mother can’t be caught or if kittens are (after being observed for hours and hours, ideally days) seemingly alone and without a mother (this is very rare). And of course some kittens are tragically dumped in random places.

This little boy was taken from his mother by tourists. They then put him back on the street, but with no sign of the mother to protect or feed him he was at great risk. Other tourists stepped in to save him when it became clear he couldn’t be left alone.

The original finders had no business taking him and then dumping him, without a plan. You cannot just pick up kittens and return them when the novelty has worn off. The kitten was in a much more vulnerable situation than when he was first found - where would he get food from? Who would protect him now?

Thankfully he was rescued and taken to Maria’s. But this should never have happened - it was a grossly irresponsible thing to happen.

The busy summer tourist season also coincides with kitten season and while many tourists are well meaning, there has to be logic behind decisions and actions otherwise orphaned kittens like Tate end up paying the price.

If you’d like to donate towards Tate’s care please donate below. Your help makes a huge difference at this really difficult time of year.

I was living in hell at a hoarder’s house and thought I’d never get out. I was going crazy. I couldn’t run or jump and it was so uncomfortable. My tiny cage, which I shared with other cats, was hard, exposed and dark.

Now I’m safe after Maria rescued me and some of my friends.

Please consider supporting cats like me by donating via the links below.

Souvlaki survived against the odds. It’s sadly quite common for kittens here in Crete to be cruelly separated from their mothers by people who see cats as a nuisance.

This is no real solution. The mothers will go on to have more kittens and the cycle of suffering will never end.

Please neuter your cats and where possible, get strays in your area neutered.

Prince is the sweetest, cuddliest, neediest cat on the planet. He loves to climb up visitors’ legs and give them a little loving nibble too!

If you have ever visited Maria’s Cathouse you will know exactly who he is - Prince is also a BIG boy and loves to have big cuddles and let out his cute aggression 😂

Prince has asthma, which Maria has to monitor and manage. He is just one of many cats with special needs at Maria’s Cathouse. Maria is a lifeline for these cats who would struggle hugely on the streets of Chania on the Greek island of Crete.
