PLEASE, PLEASE do not take kittens away from their mothers.
They MUST be kept together AND taken together. If needed, mother cats should be trapped and sterilised before being returned (when kittens are weaned). It really is no use just mindlessly taking kittens and returning them, especially when the mother is nowhere to be found.
There are some exceptions of course - if a kitten is gravely unwell and the mother can’t be caught or if kittens are (after being observed for hours and hours, ideally days) seemingly alone and without a mother (this is very rare). And of course some kittens are tragically dumped in random places.
This little boy was taken from his mother by tourists. They then put him back on the street, but with no sign of the mother to protect or feed him he was at great risk. Other tourists stepped in to save him when it became clear he couldn’t be left alone.
The original finders had no business taking him and then dumping him, without a plan. You cannot just pick up kittens and return them when the novelty has worn off. The kitten was in a much more vulnerable situation than when he was first found - where would he get food from? Who would protect him now?
Thankfully he was rescued and taken to Maria’s. But this should never have happened - it was a grossly irresponsible thing to happen.
The busy summer tourist season also coincides with kitten season and while many tourists are well meaning, there has to be logic behind decisions and actions otherwise orphaned kittens like Tate end up paying the price.
If you’d like to donate towards Tate’s care please donate below. Your help makes a huge difference at this really difficult time of year.
