Meet Maria, she runs the rescue single-handedly and cares for nearly 200 cats solo.

Crete is lovely in the summer, but it can get windy, wet and cold over the winter months. The hotels, restaurants and many businesses close and tourists more or less disappear. This means the food supply and shelter for many strays disappears very suddenly and there are fewer people looking out for their welfare and vet needs.

For the cats at my sanctuary, it means many are chronically unwell and therefore vulnerable to the cold and seasonal changes. They need sufficient shelter, and there are always repairs to be made.

Maria takes in many cats who have long-standing issues as a result of injuries. This beautiful boy was hit by a car, sustaining life-changing neurological damage, a head tilt and leaving him completely blind.
