🌟 STAR OF THE WEEK 🌟

Say hello to Rory! 🐶

Rory was referred to us from Howells Veterinary Services, due to injuries sustained by another dog. 😢

On admission to us Rory had a shallow respiratory pattern and needed to be given flow by oxygen. There were two small wounds in his abdomen near his umbilicus, and Howells Vets had diagnosed a pneumothorax (this occurs when air leaks from the lung into the space between the lung and the chest wall). 🫁

Rory was stabilized and given a general anesthetic to assess his wounds and other injuries. A chest drain was placed and the pneumothorax was drained. His wounds were clipped, cleaned and stapled to prevent a further influx of air. There was some moderate swelling/ bruising and a suspected body wall rupture ventrally. 🤕

We performed a CT scan to confirm Rory's internal injuries and our surgeon, Jonathan, performed surgery to repair Rory's diaphragm and linea alba. 🧑🏻‍⚕️

Rory initially recovered well, but did develop some vomiting, we believe this was due to the medication, methadone. He stayed in with us for a couple of days so we could monitor the vomiting and the chest drain output. 🤮

Rory's vomiting stopped, he was comfy, his wound was healing well and there wasn't any production from his drain, so this was removed and Rory was discharged home. 🏠

We saw Rory back a few days ago and can confirm that he is continuing to recover well. 🥳

He was the bravest boy throughout everything he went through! 👏

🌟 STAR OF THE WEEK 🌟

Meet Molly! 😻

Molly is a 7 month old, oriental kitten, who was referred to us by her usual primary care practice, Churchfield Vets. 👨‍⚕️

She presented to them as she had been vomiting bile, was lethargic, inappetent and hadn't defecated for quite a while. An ultrasound and bloods were performed and Molly was sent home, but she didn't improve. 😿

On admission here, Molly had a high temperature and had started with some tremors. We performed a CT but this only revealed gastric wall thickening, consistent with inflammatory process, such as gastritis. 🤷‍♀️

Blood samples were taken for toxoplasma, feline coronavirus (cause of FIP) and alpha-1-acid glycoprotein (acute-phase protein which is often elevated in FIP), these were sent to our external lab for testing. Initial treatment was started for suspected pneumonia whilst we awaited the lab results. 🧪

Molly's tremors progressed and she also became quite ataxic and developed a slight head tilt, however she was happy in herself, eating well and her temperature had stabilized. 😿

When Molly's lab results came back the results for toxoplasmosis were negative. Unfortunately, the results for feline coronavirus and alpha-1-acid glycoprotein were positive which confirmed she had been exposed to feline coronavirus. Since her clinical signs and lab results were indicative of FIP, Molly was started on a medication called GS-441524, which is a novel anti-viral medication used to treat FIP in cats. Molly was also treated with antibiotics, anti-nausea medication and intravenous fluid therapy. 😷

Molly's symptoms started to improve, which showed she was responding well to the medication. 🥳

After an 11 day stay with us, she was able to be discharged home. 🏠

We have had an update from her owner to advise Molly is continuing to improve and we will see her back soon for her repeat blood tests. 😸

✨Celebrating Achievements✨

This week we are celebrating our Senior Medical Nurse, Ruby, who has been shortlisted as a finalist for Writer of the Year at the Veterinary Nursing Journal! This is awarded to the author of an article that has encouraged discussions, positive change or improved clinical standards in practice!

We shared Ruby’s article last year - ‘A Guide to Enteral Feeding Tubes’ which shares insight into appropriate feeding tube selection and associated care and maintenance.

The VNJ is one of the biggest journals in the world of veterinary nursing, so this is a huge achievement! We wish Ruby the best of luck at the BVNA Congress in October, when the award will be presented.

🌟 STAR OF THE WEEK 🌟

This is Lucie! 🐶

Lucie was referred to us from her primary care practice, Battle Flatts Veterinary Clinic, as she was having issues with lameness on her right front leg. 🦵

Our orthopedic surgeon, Andrea, performed a CT scan of both front limbs, including Lucie's shoulders to try to get to the bottom of her lameness. 🩻

The CT scan revealed a fissure (a fissure is a weakness in the humerus where it meets the elbow joint.) 🦴

Andrea performed an arthrotomy and coronoidectomy procedure where the joint capsule and fascia were closed. 🧑‍⚕️

Lucie stayed in overnight with us for monitoring and was discharged home the next day. 🏠

She will come back to us is 6 weeks time for Andrea to re examine her to see how she is progressing. 😃

I think you will all agree with us that she is such a stunning girl! 😍
