Meet Millie and her 3 Irish Terriers, Sunny, Arya and Monty who appeared at crufts recently 🥳🐾🤍
——————————————
Irish terriers are sharp minded, energetic dogs that were developed to hunt vermin and protect farms and livestock. They are a loyal, family-oriented breed that will happily curl up on the sofa or walk for miles each day. 🥰🤍🐶
Common questions:
How much exercise – 1 hour per day minimum but will happily go for much longer. 🐕
Recall – requires lots of training from early on that can take a long while to progress. High prey drive from vermin hunting origin.
Other dogs – known to have a tendency to show aggression towards other dogs, but extra socialisation training may be beneficial. 🥰
Hand stripping/grooming – hand stripped to removed long dead hair from double coat, can be frequent or infrequent. Should be brushed at least once a week. Only bath if required as it removed waterproof oils from the coat and softens the coarse wiry fur. If stripped less regularly fur will grow out longer and provide a scruffy look. Shaving or cutting the fur will remove red colouring, leading to a wheaten red coat. 🐶
General temperament – family oriented, loyal to owner, energetic, sharp minded (very intelligent) will get bored easily, lots of character/personality.
Trainability – eager to please, short session often more beneficial due to easy boredom from lack of variety and encouraged thinking, harsh correction/tone/handling can cause timidness and withdrawal due to timidness (positive reinforcement recommended), terrier stubbornness can be apparent.
Health issues – hyperkeratosis is tested for before breeding.
Children – most love children (human versions of themselves).
Vulnerable breed – on the RKC vulnerable native breeds list (less than 300 dogs registered per year).
Often not recommended as first dog due to terrier characteristics and potential aggression towards dogs.😌
