Autumn, famously dubbed the "Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness" by the poet Keats, is a time renowned for its bountiful harvests, cooling weather, gradual lengthening of the nights, and brilliantly vibrant foliage on trees and shrubs.

This colour change to our garden takes place as chlorophyll, the green pigment in leaves, begins to fade, and other chemicals hidden within the foliage take centre stage. These newly prominent compounds - specifically flavonoids, carotenoids, and anthocyanins - are what create the vibrant ambers, reds, and yellows we associate with autumn.

Interestingly, some of these same pigments are responsible for colouring familiar foods, like the beta-carotenes found in carrots and the luteins that colour egg yolks!

Happy Halloween!

Did you know that gardens can harbour some truly creepy flora?!

Among the most unsettling are poisonous plants, such as the white baneberry, whose uncanny, eye-like berries can trigger a heart attack. Then there's the notorious Co**se Flower, which lives up to its name by emitting the repulsive stench of a rotting body!

Other macabre examples include: the ghostly white ghost plant, which completely lacks chlorophyll; the ominous bat flower, so named because it uncannily resembles a bat in flight; and carnivorous plants, like the infamous Venus flytrap, which actively hunts, traps, and digests insects!

Everyone loves a fruit tree (especially when you can actually use the fruit to create something delicious!) We love a good apple tree (and a good apple crumble to boot!)

As Halloween approaches, we’re sure plenty of you will be planning an apple bobbing game for your spooky parties, but ever wondered why apples float? Basically, they are 25% air which is why they float so well in water… who knew?!

A brief, yet beautiful, bloom…

An enchanting spectacle occurs nightly in the Walmer Castle glasshouse.

The plant responsible is the Epiphyllum, ‘orchid cactus’ or 'Queen of the Night'. This South American succulent only flowers in the evening, sometimes producing 25-30 large white blossoms. By morning, the flowers have already wilted.

Hidden among the foliage during the day, the 'Queen of the Night' relies on moths and bats for pollination. It was first brought to the Castle around 2008 by Lord Warden's wife and is expected to flower until mid-September.

Our Plant of the Month for October is the Cotinus Coggygria 'Young Lady' (Smoke Bush) - a dwarf shrub originating from the Netherlands.

Ideal for small gardens, this slow-growing deciduous plant bursts with large plumes of peachy pink, smoke-like flowers during the summer, turning to stunning shades of red and orange, before dropping in autumn.

Did you know...?

During the 1600s, the Netherlands was gripped by a speculative frenzy known as Tulip Mania, or Tulipomania. At its peak, tulip bulbs became so highly prized that they were worth more than gold! This economic bubble eventually burst, causing a significant crash in the Dutch economy.

Interestingly, cut tulips can continue to grow up to an inch per day.

A little taster of what goes on behind the scenes when you begin the garden design process with us.

After an initial visit and consultation, talented Andi, armed with your info, will get drawing – using his 30 years’ worth of experience to show how the current garden can be transformed into the perfect garden for you!

After listening to your requirements and ideas, absorbing and interpreting them, Andi will present them to you to get your feedback, and make any adjustments required.

Once the initial sketch is approved, Andi will take it to the next stage and create a 3D garden design using our special software. This computer-aided technology allows you to view your garden design in 3D, from multiple angles, thus giving a peek into the future as to how your new garden will look!

Find out more about the process by visiting www.andiwaygarden.design today!
