Gemma's Garden

Gemma's Garden This garden has been created in memory of my much loved horse, Gemma, so other people can remember their pets, large and small.

When Gemma died, I committed to transforming a piece of unused land into something I hoped would bring pleasure to other people. This page has been set up to share a bit about Gemma and how Gemma's Garden came about.

Morning world

Martyn mowed again yesterday and took 3 tonne bags of grass and a green bin off. Quite a surprise given we’re coming to the end of season.

Anyway, it looks lovely again. Thank you Martyn Allen

I used to do it myself with a ride on mower but it’s too much for me with a push mower.

So we wouldn’t have a Gemma’s Garden without a “Mower Man”.

Martyn is now 3rd generation having been aptly preceded by Brian Kelly and Daniel Stilgoe.

Enjoy x

Hello world

I’m a tad late with this post but “better late than not at all” as they say.

Some of you may have noticed a change to the regular lawn mower man at the start of this season.

My good friend Brian, has moved house to pastures new, at a distance that would make continuing to mow Gemma’s impossible.

Brian has mowed Gemma’s weekly, during the growing season, for the past 6 years. He has also stored and serviced the mower every year and carried out some considerable repairs over this time.

All of this has been done in his own time, out of the goodness of his heart as maintaining Gemma’s Garden is not a paid activity.

I think it’s only right to take a few moments to formally say “Thank you Brian” from myself and Gemma, all the horsey folk and the walkers and dog walkers that have come to appreciate the space.

We wish you well in your new home and hope you soon find some new 4 legged friends to chat to in the sunshine.

With love from Karen & Martyn ( the new mower man )

Hello world

First mow of the season today so it won’t be looking it’s best until we’re a few mows in.

It was also a tad on the long side to start with…..

Hello world

You may have noticed there hasn’t been a bench at Gemma’s Garden for a while. After 15 years, the old one had to be sent to the bench factory in the sky. That particular one was only designed to last for 10 years so it did well and I can’t complain.

I’m pleased to report Martyn Allen and I installed a replacement yesterday.

As always it’s a team effort to make stuff happen, so many Thank You’s to…

Martyn for laying the slabs and assembling the bench.
Jo Sawyer for picking up and gifting the extra chain to secure it there.
Alexander Rose Ltd for giving me a discount.
Smiths Concrete Ltd who do the sand and gravel extraction for paying for it.
Brian Kelly for keeping the whole area mown during the growing season
And Lesley Pugh for letting us be there in the first place.

Me - I just sit on my backside and talk a lot 😂.

Happy Tuesday world 🤗

P.S. I know the trees need a prune and the glass centre piece needs a tidy up, it’s on my list

Hello world

You’ll probably have noticed the bench has disappeared from Gemma’s Garden.

We brought it home for repairs at the beginning of this month.

Having taken it apart, the time required to strip it of all weather protection, replace some timber, remake the joints, put it back together again, before painting is not cost effective.

I contacted Alexander Rose, who were prepared to send out replacement timber, but they have confirmed our conclusion, it is beyond economical repair.

A bench of that type is expected to last no longer than 10 years, but our yearly maintenance has more than exceed that, so we can’t complain.

I am now getting quotes for a new bench and intend to set up a Go Fund Me page to spread the cost.

Thank you 🤗

Hello FB world -Facebook regularly tells me that this page gets viewed. However Facebook doesn't tell me who has viewed or what someone has looked at or even how they've arrived at this site.

Could you help educate me please and leave me some feedback, good or bad.

Many many thanks and regards, Karen

Well we've come to the end of another grass growing year and the mower can be put away until the Spring. The regular mowing wouldn't be possible without Brian giving up a few hours of his time every 10 days and to say I'd be stuffed without his help is an understatement. Not only does it all get mowed but Brian sends me a new photo to share how nice it all looks - Thank you Brian 😊. This year has also seen the reinstatement of the glass rosette thanks to Martyn Allen's skills and time. Additional jobs have also seen the removal of the grass heap and the nettles around the perimeter and at some point the bench will disappear for its winter treatment, ready for returning in the Spring. Thank you to everyone who has "Liked" and/or commented on Gemma's Garden. 😀
