Is your older pup suddenly worried by strangers or spooked by the bin lorry? Are they avoiding things they used to love?

You’re not alone — they might be going through the second fear period, it’s a totally normal phase that can pop up between 6–14 months of age.

It’s a time of emotional wobbles, and I’m here to help.

I created Puppy Plus to help you and your pup navigate adolescence and the second fear period.

Over the six week course, we will:
Revisit early training

Build confidence through exposure to new and novel items, and

Support YOU through the ups and downs

There were many moments that led me to where I am today, but the decision to
join the Absolute Dogs Pro Dog Trainer Programme was the first significant
step. Initially, I had no intention of becoming a professional dog trainer; my goal was simply to train my own dog.
When I got my first spaniel, I was completely unprepared for his strong
hunting instincts. When we left the house, his nose would go straight to the ground, and I had no idea how to get his attention back.
I sought help from various trainers, but their methods didn’t resonate with me. I struggled to understand their techniques and found myself losing confidence rather than gaining it.
While searching for help online, I
discovered a new method that explained how dogs learn and the effectiveness
of using rewards to teach new skills. Although the programme was designed for aspiring dog trainers, I decided to join out of curiosity.
At the time, I was a nurse with no plans to become a dog trainer.
That was just the beginning and since then, I have continued my search for knowledge and experience to help me understand how to help dogs and their owners reach their true potential and live life to the fullest.

Bruce went for his second hydrotherapy session. He was less worried this time and I think he enjoyed himself.
We took a water dummy for him to retrieve and the throw rope was useful for guiding him round the pool.
Bruce has had intermittent front leg lameness for a few months now and the vet recommended hydrotherapy.

The benefits of hydrotherapy are to
Relieve pain, swelling and stiffness
Improve range of motion, and
Improve circulation to the muscles by increasing the supply of oxygen and nutrients and flushing away waste products.

He has another session next week 💙🐶🐾

Do you have a puppy between 5 and 18 months?

Have you noticed that they have developed selective hearing? Or have they become fearful?

Keeping your training going at this time can help keep you on track, and if training has started to unravel, will restore your confidence and reinforce core skills.

I developed my puppy plus classes with you in mind.

The course consists if 6 classes over 6 weeks and we will revisit important elements of training such as walking nicely on the lead and coming back when called.

We will help your adolescent puppy handle distractions and maintain their focus on you.

We will also introduce fun confidence building exercises to combat the second fear period.

The next set of puppy plus classes starts on 11th September in West Wickham at 7.15pm. DM or visit www.bugzysdogs.co.uk

You’ll get this if you’ve ever experienced the strange phenomenon of disappearing food! 😂
When you’re a dog trainer, you have a perfect dog, right? Well, not always. Take last week, for example, when my son was going to be late for dinner.
I left a jacket potato on the side for him. When he came home, I went to give him the jacket, but I couldn’t find it anywhere. 🤷‍♀️ There was no trace!
I couldn’t work out who the culprit was 😳, but I suspect 🧐 Flash.
On a good note, there was no harm done 🙂, apart from a hungry son. 😋
Drop a 🐾 in the comments if you’ve experienced this strange happening!

Clients often Wonder Why I Teach Recall Differently 🐾

Many clients expect recall training to start with their dog off the lead at the park, probably having a great time sniffing and playing.
They’re often surprised that I don’t teach recall like this.
My approach is different because I want to set the dog up for success.

This is what I do:
1. Start on a Short Lead: Keep your dog close so they have no choice but to come back to you. Call them and reward them well for coming back. High value rewards are so important, I encourage my clients to have a party to let their dog know they have done a great thing.
2. Build Foundations: I continue the training with lots of practise and that means lots of rewards as well. Your dog will start to understand that coming back to you is a good deal.
3. Gradually Increase Distance: The next step is to use a longer lead and gradually increase the distance your dog is from you. It’s important not to rush the training. Continue to reward every successful recall because this makes it more likely your dog will come back next time.
4. When this is working well, you can add in distractions and practise in busier places. Make sure you keep rewarding your dog for coming back, that way, your dog will always be keen to come back to you.

Front foot targeting with position transitions, fun activity for growing engagement and body awareness. You can see how much he loves this training. He’s not the only one working, on the bed is Flash 21 months old, he would love to join in but he knows his job is to stay on the bed until it’s his turn. It takes great self control to do this.
