🌞 Summer Is Here—And So Are All the Dogs! 🐾

Every year when the sun comes out, so do the dogs—many for the first time since last summer. But here’s the thing: those good behaviors from last year? They don’t stick without practice.

For dogs who’ve been out consistently year-round, it can feel overwhelming to suddenly be surrounded by under-socialized, overexcited dogs. And for the pups just stepping back into the world? It’s a LOT to take in.

🎯 Tip for reintroducing your dog to the world:
Teach (or revisit) the settle. Make it a great thing for them! Bring high-value treats, reward calmness often—especially in busy or distracting environments. A calm dog is a working dog, and they’re putting in effort. Recognize that.

✅ Drop a treat now and then just for chilling out.
✅ Praise matters too—a “good dog” or gentle stroke goes a long way.
✅ As your dog adjusts and the world feels less “new,” you can ease off the treats—but never stop the praise.

Your dog wants to get it right. Let them know when they do. ❤️🐶

Video is an example of a dog I've been working with. Yes, she's a beagle, yes beagles can be calm too when the training is right 😎

Sadly, max is going on sick leave for a while. He is not going anywhere but will be taking a break.

At his booster appointment today the vet took a look at some videos we have taken of him walking and he seems to be struggling with his back hip quite a bit despite the dietary additions.

He's been put on a course of antiinflammatories and we are awaiting a date for x-rays and a longer term plan.

As you will probably be aware pain can be the cause of unexpected behaviours and as soft and gentle as max is I am not going to push him through any potential pain, nor risk him being in a situation where he might not be able to move around easily enough.

I am a very good employer though and max will be getting his wages in full still (amazing food), dedicated meetings where we can discuss how he is managing, and his expected return date, walk and talk sessions every day to keep his physical and mental welfare strong, as well as as many fusses as he asks for - that one is probably crossing the professional boundaries but it's me and my max and nothing will get in the way of our bond.

I think I have made contact with everyone who is being helped by Max at the moment but if I've missed you please send me a message so we can discuss one of my other dogs filling in during his absence and what that will look like.

Thought I'd try the dogs with some sprats in their breakfast. Two said no but Max loved dissecting before eating his and the others. For some reason it had completely slipped my mind that the insides of the fish would still be there so thank you to max for letting me see the blood and gore on the mat 🤮

Unfortunately I can't show pictures of this one due to complicated circumstances however I need to share something wonderful.

It is situations like this where I confirm that my speciality is helping dogs to feel confident and safe to explore the world.

Only a couple of weeks ago a very scared and nervous young girl came to stay with me. She has gone from taking 20 minutes to decide whether or not to walk into a room and running to hide at any noise or movement, to joining in with the mayhem that has become my home.

She has joined in with the other dogs to get excited and hope for strokes from visitors, giving them kisses (and a little mouthing).

She has been out to play as one of a group of 8 dogs.

She has a waggy tail when she sees me in the morning and runs with the other dogs to wait for her breakfast and dinner.

She plays with toys, initiates play with humans and dogs and if something spooks her she will take a minute and then go back to explore.

How? With patience, love, care, understanding of dog communication and providing safe opportunities.

Is training taking too long?
Are you too busy to do the amount of sessions needed for the training to stick?
Are you fed up of waiting for the next class to learn the next step?
Are your dogs issues not being met by the training class?
Are you learning a structured set of cues that you already know how to teach?
Do you have something coming up where you need your dog to know what's expected of them?

With my new intensive training service I may be able to help.

What does it include?
21 hours of training split into small manageable chunks over 7 days.
Working on impulse control, loose lead walking and the first steps of behaviour modification.
Training with you or for you and then joining it all together to work on your cues and mechanics on the final day.

You don't need to send your dog away for the training. I will come to you.
You don't need to share the trainers attention with 6+ other dogs. It will just be me, you and the dog. Maybe a stooge if that's what we need.
You can keep your night time cuddles and your morning wake up calls. You can see that your dog remains happy throughout and that I only use positive, science backed training methods.

If it's something you want to try give me a shout but for more details, they can be found on my website

Intensive dog training with Janine White Dog Behaviour helps you and your dog to work through the training at a fast pace instead of attending weekly classes or fortnightly sessions. Using positive reinforcement and science backed methods the changes can be remarkable.

6 dog breeds I will never buy

This seems to be the title coming up a lot at the moment so I thought I would get involved and join the party. Got to keep with the trends after all 🤣

1. One that doesn't fit my lifestyle
(Been there, done that, it was a sad situation for everyone). That pretty much rules out working lines for me.

2. One that doesn't cost much
(One made for quick money making? A puppy farm? What's the socialisation so far? Why are they rehoming? Have the parents and pups been healthy checked? Too many what ifs and the money making people have too many ways to get around the questions)

3. One that costs a fortune
(True, the breeders are more likely to have spent time helping the dog be stable but I've been there too and its never a guarantee of what you're going to get). The stronger the pedigree, the higher the chances of genetic predispositions)

4. A spur of the moment decision dog
(One where the heart says yes but the head says no. Been there and logical thinking should always outweigh the heart for everyone's sanity and the dogs welfare)

5. A dog that's not from a rescue centre

6. Thought I would add this just to meet the expectations of the post... A chihuahua (those dogs are scary!)

Getting a dog from a rescue has so many benefits.

A thorough history is taken from the owners (unless it's a stray).

A full vet health check has been completed so shocks are unlikely.

A full behavioural assessment has been applied.

A good rescue centre will have started the training and socialisation needed for a stable dog.

A good rescue centre is there for you when you need support post adoption.

There's usually at least one dog that will fit your home, your family and circumstances. If not, hold on, there will be one soon.

The rescues are already overflowing so if you become another statistic that buys the wrong dog for your life, what will you do?

If you would like the details of good rescues in your area, give me a shout and I will happily put you in touch.

Oh and last thing!!

Did you know I knock 20% off my prices for support with rescue dogs?

Puppy socialisation puppy training. Adult and adolescent dog training. Behaviour therapy. Training walks. Recognised separation anxiety specialist. Short courses and rescue dog reductions in the North West
