Celebrating 10 Years of Bespoke Bridle making
Hi everyone!
For those who are new here, my name is Kelly and I'm a passionate equestrian specializing in the creation of bespoke, hand-stitched bridles.
My journey began 10 years ago, and over the years, my business has evolved into a focus on crafting a truly unique and personalized bridles that as comfortable for the horse as possible. As a Society of Master Saddlers Master Bridle Maker, a qualified Bridle Fitter, and a Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust Scholar, I'm dedicated to ensuring optimal comfort and performance for every horse.

My bridles are not only functional but also stunningly beautiful. I offer a wide range of colors and styles, moving beyond traditional aesthetics to cater to every rider's individual preferences.

This is the philosophy that guides my work. I embrace the challenge of creating bespoke designs tailored to your specific needs and preferences, but also ensuring the horse's comfort and welfare. This is highlighted in my specially designed jewel padding system with a high impact soft foam and a visco elastic polymer gel inserted in key points

While I'm based in West Sussex and offer in-person fittings throughout the South of England, I also cater to clients worldwide. My website features easy-to-follow guides for measuring existing bridles, allowing me to create perfectly fitting tack even from a distance. I've successfully shipped my creations to destinations as diverse as the USA, South Africa, and Bermuda.

With a rollout plan, as of January 2025 the FEI will be using a new measuring tool to determine the tightness of the noseband. This new tool offers a “pass” indicating sufficient laxity or “fail” indicating the noseband is too tight.

This is a positive step forward as the tool will be used on the front (nasal bone) and not on the side as is currently done by the FEI. The tool has been designed to be more practical and horse friendly compared to existing tools.

The tool will be available to purchase from the FEI therefore encouraging all riders, trainers and coaches to use it to check noseband fit.

This is Peg, she’s a one year lab who got hit by a car 😢
She now has nerve damage in her shoulder that means she has lost the use of the leg. We are trying hard to get some function back in the leg and there is some slow progress so far. Keeping everything crossed she makes a good recovery 🤞🤞She is the sweetest girl ever ❤️

Backing up is a great exercise to practice, I practice this every day with mine.
Not only is it really helpful when it comes to keeping safe and getting them to move out of your space and for opening gates on the ground and ridden. But also it encourages them to flex through their spine and pelvis and engage their abdominal muscles and glutes💪
The important thing is to keep their head low to prevent them hollowing through their back, I cheat here by using treats 😂The other thing is to keep them straight, maybe do along a fence line or between 2 poles if they tend to wiggle. And finally only ask for a few steps at a time.

Some examples of equine kinesiology taping with the perfect model that is flint ❤️
Taping is great for pain relief, correcting posture, improving stability at joints, supporting injured muscles and also facilitating muscle activity. It can be used for both ridden and groundwork.
This is something I can offer as part of my equine physio treatments.

What makes my bridles different?
I would say the part that I'm most proud of is the headpiece.
Every single headpiece is cut to order to that particular horse. The shaping and width is so important as although we would love to have great ear clearance and a good wide headpiece that is not always possible for many horses. Just like the girth groove some horses have a limited space behind the ear to the wing of the atlas so they have to have the appropriately shaped headpiece to suit that this would avoid rubbing or the headpiece tipping forward or back as I call it a ski slope, this will leave uneven pressure as the headpiece isn't sitting totally flat on the horse's head.

You can see that my padding sits well below the browband that lifts the headpiece and the browband off the face, aiming to relieve pressure around the TMJ.

Also, as always the combination of my dual padding of a high impact soft foam and a viscoelastic polymer is the perfect combination of a soft squishy padding for peak horse comfort.

As all my customers can agree that they feel a huge difference in how their horses go and act when they switch to my bridles ❤️

‘My dog is naughty/bad/untrainable/dominant/stupid’

I hear this most weeks on intake forms. Usually I get pretty excited to see these cos I know I’m gonna get to change a dog and owners life!

So often we write our dogs off as any adjective that fits the above and honestly, I’m yet to meet a dog who fits any of those adjectives (and I have worked with 10k plus dogs over the ten years I’ve been doing this!). I do however week in week out meet dogs with health issues that contribute to their slow progress in terms of training. Did you know dogs don’t show pain or discomfort how we do? We often think ‘oh he isn’t limping or yelping so he is fine’.

Please read the examples below ⬇️

🐾 A huntaway cross who I work with who bit his owner. Reluctant to have his feet cleaned, got spicy over any intense handling, had periods of seeming insanity and relentless barking and being unable to calm down. Huntaways are vocal dogs… but…

Turns out he had hip dysplasia. This dog didn’t limp. He wasn’t lame in any way. He chased his ball and sprinted and jumped and had no issues physically on the surface however under that behaviour was pain.

🐾 A French bulldog. Resource guarding to the extreme. Bit his owners while resource guarding the knot pattern in their wooden floor. Also bombed around without a worry in the world and had no outward signs of pain.

Turns out he had a severe spinal condition causing intermittent excruciating pain.

🐾 A young spaniel owned by a very good friend who was having confidence issues. She would ‘tap out’ of training on the regular and my friend went from ‘this is my ticket dog who will represent my country’ to ‘is this even possible?’

Dog had hormonal issues and likely spikes of hormones left right and centre. A carefully timed spay and she is now grade 6 in agility.

🐾 A friends Border Collie. Owned by a very experienced and talented agility handler and trainer. Regularly ‘checked out’ of training sessions, seemed to not be able to learn things that were moderately straightforward. Described by other trainers as ‘oh she is just a border collie it’s what they are like’.

Turns out she is mostly deaf.

🐾 A black Labrador. Always social and friendly and attended brilliant puppy classes and adolescent classes. Had the best start training wise you can imagine. He started showing some intermittent aggression to his owners in the home and aggression to other dogs out and about.

Turns out he had bilateral elbow dysplasia.

🐾 Young German Shepherd. Always energetic and silly in her behaviour but suddenly got worse. Excessive zoomies, inability to settle, increased reactivity to other dogs, reluctant to get in the car, obsessive destruction at home.

Turns out she had an infection in her va**na that was causing discomfort and exacerbating all those teenage behaviours to the point of being unmanageable.

🐾 My own dog! My NSDTR started missing his dog walk contact early last year. I was tearing my hair out trying to fix it.

Turns out he had a minor iliopsoas strain and some physio fixed the issue for us.

All these dogs have one thing in common. They are not stupid or untrainable or naughty or dominant. They are uncomfortable and that is triggering extreme behaviour fallout.

None of the above issues would be resolveable with training. All of the issues will be resolveable with training ONLY when the pain is resolved. Some of them will have drastic improvement from the moment the pain or discomfort is managed!

If your behaviourist or trainer doesn’t immediately advise a veterinary visit if any aggression, excessive ‘naughtiness’ or strange behaviour is present, walk away immediately. Even if you think your dog is fine, visit the vets. Ask for a thorough examination and push for a proper evaluation of your dog from nose to tail and potentially blood tests too. If you’re still not sure, get a second opinion.

You cannot train the pain or discomfort out of your dog. Address THIS first and foremost.

Concussion can present in a variety of ways and will differ from person to person. Signs and symptoms can be physical, cognitive or behavioural, and it's important to remember that they can take hours or sometimes days to appear.
