So if you’re looking for a good starter reptile… these guys are ideal for those who are looking to get into the hobby…
Crested geckos (eyelash geckos) are now one of the most kept geckos in the world, and for good reason.
The husbandry needs are easy with them being happy at most room temperatures, 25 °c ( though having a deep heat projector bulb attached to a dimming thermostat is highly recommended to maintain contain temps in our somewhat dramatic uk seasonal changes)
Also humidity is 80%-50% which is kept by normally a once a day misting with water.
Best kept in a bioactive enclosure ( live plant and bugs for keeping clean) there is no need to clean the tanks as it’s a mini ecosystem which is self managing, just the odd plant trim now and again, and looks like a tropical rainforest in your home.
Crested geckos (commonly called “cresties”) are originally from New Caledonia off the east coast of Australia and are one of the 4 main geckos found there.
They were thought to be extinct up until the mid 90’s…. Until one research team had one drop from a tree onto their heads.
Now they are the most common reptile kept in the world.
They come in many colours, or morphs, have sticky feet like most arboreal geckos, grow normally to about 9inchs and have prehensile tails that unfortunately dont grow back once dropped like most gecko species, becoming “frog butts”
The crested gecko isn’t the smartest of reptiles sadly ( our one is nicknamed derp for that reason) but have great characters and are super handleable, making them good pets for older children.
We have two cresties, kaida aka“derp” who is a harlequin pinstripe morph male adult, and mocha aka “dip” who is a juvenile lily white morph female we thought…. But has now grown his “cresticles” and is a male also.
