๐ฆโ๏ธ Golden Wings Aviaries Educational Series: Keeping Budgies Cool During Hot Weather โ๏ธ๐ฆ
With the UK facing another heatwave, it is really important to remember that hot weather can affect both budgies kept inside the home and birds living in outdoor aviaries. The risks are slightly different depending on the setup, but overheating can become dangerous very quickly if birds cannot cool themselves properly.
Budgerigars are very good at hiding discomfort, so by the time a bird is visibly struggling, they may already be under significant heat stress. Many people assume budgies cope easily with heat because they originate from Australia, but wild budgies can move to shade, find airflow, seek water and avoid dangerous temperatures. Our birds rely on us to manage that environment for them ๐ค
โ๏ธ Indoor Budgies and Birdrooms
For birds kept inside the home, the biggest risk is trapped heat. Conservatories, loft rooms, enclosed birdrooms and rooms with large sunny windows can heat up extremely quickly. Glass magnifies heat and poor airflow can turn a comfortable room into a dangerous environment before many people even realise.
Indoor birds may also struggle when household air becomes still and heavy. This can be especially difficult for older birds, overweight birds, heavily feathered birds, young chicks, or birds with respiratory issues.
At GWA, during extreme temperatures, I use an air conditioning unit in the birdroom while still ensuring there is good ventilation and airflow throughout the room. The aim is to keep the environment stable and comfortable rather than cold, stale, or draughty.
I also lightly spray my birds down during very hot weather. Many of them absolutely love itโฆ although there is always at least one dramatic budgie acting like I have personally committed a crime against them ๐ญ๐ฆ
During particularly hot periods, I have also used Spark supplement to help support hydration and electrolytes alongside fresh water and proper cooling measures. Supplements are never a replacement for ventilation, shade, hydration and temperature management, but they can be useful additional support during periods of heat stress when used correctly.
Helpful ways to support indoor birds include:
๐ฟ Keeping curtains or blinds closed during the hottest part of the day
๐ฟ Using safe ventilation and airflow without blasting fans directly onto birds
๐ฟ Using air conditioning carefully without creating sudden cold draughts
๐ฟ Refreshing drinking water several times daily
๐ฟ Offering hydrating foods such as cucumber, broccoli, fresh herbs, or soaked greens
๐ฟ Avoiding stressful handling, travel, or long cleaning sessions during peak heat
๐ฟ Never leaving birds in conservatories, parked cars, enclosed rooms, or poorly ventilated spaces
โ๏ธ Outdoor Aviaries
Outdoor aviary birds face different risks. They usually benefit from natural airflow and are often more used to seasonal temperature changes, but heatwaves can still become dangerous if there is not enough shade, airflow, space, or fresh water.
Outdoor aviaries should always have shaded areas available throughout the day so birds can choose where they feel comfortable. Metal roofing, enclosed shelters, blocked airflow and overcrowding can all increase heat build up significantly.
Helpful ways to support outdoor aviary birds include:
๐ฟ Providing shaded areas across the aviary throughout the whole day
๐ฟ Ensuring good airflow without the aviary becoming stuffy
๐ฟ Refreshing drinking and bathing water frequently
๐ฟ Adding extra water stations so no bird is pushed away from drinking
๐ฟ Checking enclosed sleeping sections for trapped heat
๐ฟ Avoiding overcrowding during very warm weather
๐ฟ Monitoring birds more often during peak temperatures
โ๏ธ Signs of Heat Distress
Signs of heat distress can include:
โ๏ธ Wings held away from the body
โ๏ธ Panting or open mouth breathing
โ๏ธ Rapid breathing or tail bobbing
โ๏ธ Weakness or lethargy
โ๏ธ Sitting low and fluffed
โ๏ธ Reduced appetite
โ๏ธ Spending excessive time near water
โ๏ธ Poor balance or collapse in severe cases
Open mouth breathing combined with weakness, heavy tail bobbing, or collapse should always be treated as urgent.
At GWA, heatwave days are all about keeping everything calm, cool and low stress. Water gets changed constantly, the birdroom is kept comfortable, the birds get a gentle spray when needed, supplements are monitored carefully, and somehow there is always one budgie still choosing the warmest possible spot despite having several better options available ๐
Heatwaves can become dangerous quickly, but with shade, airflow, fresh water, careful monitoring and preparation, most budgies can be kept comfortable and safe ๐ค
