A Pause for Reflection at Preziosa Dachshunds®
After much thought, we’ve made the decision to step away from breeding. Our upcoming litters will be our last until, well, possibly forever.
Breeding exceptional Dachshunds has always been about more than puppies for us. It’s about ethics, health, temperament, and the lifetime of care that begins the day they’re born. But as the landscape continues to change, we’ve felt a growing responsibility to react to the current problem and to stand by our principles, even when that means stepping away.
Too often now, the decision to buy a dog is driven by cost rather than quality or welfare. Ethical breeding, proper socialisation, health testing, and ongoing aftercare all come at a price, not one of excess but of integrity. Sadly, many of the dogs sold cheaply are the same ones later found in rescue or struggling due to a lack of foundation and guidance.
Whilst some breeders have chosen to fight for customers, cutting prices or compromising values and integrity in order to compete. That simply isn’t who we are, and it never will be.
The cost of breeding responsibly is immense! Emotionally, physically, and financially. When it’s done properly, it is not a path to profit. In fact, our single family holiday in seven years speaks that truth loud! Our dogs have always lived VIP lives, and we’ve been proud to give them that. But there comes a point when you have to acknowledge the sacrifice your own family makes to sustain that standard.
As I continue my training to become a therapist, my respect and understanding of ethics, empathy, and the wider world has deepened. In my professional work supporting people in mental health crisis, I see increasing distress and uncertainty everywhere.
My focus is being drawn toward helping people heal and thrive, both through therapy and through my role in local politics, where I hope to be part of change, for the better. These are deeply worrying times, and my hope is that, by pausing, I can contribute in small ways to restoring balance, compassion, and care.
This decision also gives our family the chance to pause and breathe.
Our girls have grown up surrounded by dogs and have given their hearts to every puppy born here.
We want them to have a childhood filled with stability, not constant goodbyes to little ones they’ve loved so hard.
These years are formative, and they deserve to see that love sometimes means letting go, of routines, expectations, and even something you’ve built with pride.
They deserve to feel that they come first and that their feelings are being heard - that we respect they have had enough goodbyes.
Whether or not we return to breeding, one thing will never change: our commitment to the welfare, integrity, and lifelong support of every Preziosa Dachshunds® puppy already in the world.
Thank you
