Myth: Once a dog learns one odour, it will automatically know them all

Truth: Dogs don’t generalise odours. Each new target needs to be introduced and taught separately. Just because a dog learns to detect one scent, it doesn’t mean they’ll automatically recognise another. Training is about building their scent vocabulary one odour at a time.

👻🐾 A Howl-o-ween Message from Your Dog 🐾🎃
“Humans call it Halloween… but for me, it can feel scary.
Strange costumes that make my favourite people look different, loud bangs from fireworks, and the doorbell ringing again and again… I don’t always understand what’s happening.

I might bark, hide, shake, or even growl. Please remember I’m not being ‘naughty’ — I’m just overwhelmed.
Some things you can do to help me:
🦴 Keep me in a quiet room with a cosy bed and my favourite chew.
🦴 Play music or the TV to mask the noises outside.
🦴 Keep sweets, chocolates, and decorations out of my reach (they can make me really sick).
🦴 Don’t force me to greet trick-or-treaters if I’m scared.

I want to feel safe, not spooked.
With your love and patience, Halloween doesn’t have to be frightening for me.” 💛🐶

Congratulations to Sharon and Misty for sailing through their UK Scent Sport League 1 Kong Intermediate and Advanced assessments this afternoon!

We had a couple of super Scent Club sessions - Our first time at Hernhill, and it gave us some great opportunities to think about how the building structure, layout and furnishings can influence the way that scent moves and what the odour plume might look like to our dogs. Looking forward to being back here next month!

🕵️‍♂️ Dozer’s got his UK Scent Sport hat on and he’s ready for action!

Today marks the start of our very first two day UK Scent Sport Foundation to Scent Detection Course, designed for anyone who is passionate about scent.
Scent Detection isn’t just about competitions or sniffing boxes it’s about understanding your dog on a deeper level. It builds confidence, reduces stress, provides meaningful enrichment, and strengthens that all important bond between dog and handler.

Our aim is to help people see scent detection for what it truly is a way to improve communication, trust, and teamwork with your dog.
