🦔 Winter Reminder: Keep Feeding Your Garden Hedgehogs! ❄️

Not all hedgehogs hibernate - some stay active throughout the colder months, especially the younger or underweight ones. These little visitors rely on us more than ever when natural food and water are scarce.

If you’ve seen a hedgehog in your garden recently, please continue to put out food and shallow bowls of clean water. A dish of poultry cat/kitten biscuits or specialist hedgehog biscuits, can make all the difference - and fresh water is just as vital.

💛 Every meal and sip helps them survive the season. 🌙 They forage after dark, so evening feeds are ideal. 🏡 Your garden could be their lifeline.

As the temperatures begin to drop, our much-loved hedgehogs will begin preparing for their hibernation🦔. Like many species, including us, hedgehogs come in all shapes and sizes, but to ensure that healthy hedgehogs aren't unnecessarily disturbed or brought into care, their behaviour and body shape can be a great way to check their overall condition.

This female hedgehog arrived weak and unable to fully curl up, exposing her limbs, face and core, which would make her vulnerable to predation. Her elongated oval shape is a sign of her poor body condition, and she weighted just two-thirds of what she should. She arrived because of being out in the daytime, a behaviour that can occur when hedgehogs are struggling with illness, injury or to find food during their usual active times.

☝️But, remember, healthy nesting females can also wander in the day, building their nests.

For this female hog, both her behaviour and body condition indicated she needed help. A healthy hedgehog should usually only be active at night and have a round body shape, with all extremities tucked in, to the point you can't tell which end is which🤔!

Autumn baby 🦔 season is upon us. If you find hoglet out in the day, please help!
When there is one hoglet, there are likely to be more so please check the surrounding area being careful not to disturb the nest as it may cause Mum to abandon her babies.
