“Self-Defense Is Not a Crime”: Tense Protests Erupt as Karmelo Anthony Trial Begins
Tensions are rising outside the Collin County Courthouse in McKinney as jury selection enters its final stages in the high-profile murder trial of 19-year-old Karmelo Anthony.
Anthony is charged with first-degree murder for the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf during an argument at a Frisco ISD track meet on April 2, 2025. He has pleaded not guilty, claiming self-defense.
Supporters of Anthony gathered outside the courthouse, chanting “Self-defense is not a crime” and wearing “He Is FREE” shirts with his image. The protests have drawn counter-demonstrators, creating a charged atmosphere as the community remains deeply divided over the case.
The incident, which occurred in front of numerous witnesses at a school athletic event, has sparked intense online debate and raised difficult questions about youth violence, self-defense laws, and racial dynamics in Texas.
Opening statements are expected soon as the trial moves forward under heavy security.
