Why do dogs get arthritis?

To a certain extent arthritis is an inevitable consequence of the wear and tear generated in normal life but there are things that really exacerbate or accelerate it:

πŸ• Correct use of an abnormal joint - If your dog has dysplasia for example then the joint will be abnormal and will wear quickly through normal use, resulting in arthritis. Your dog will shift their body weight away from the sore areas which leads to πŸ‘‡

πŸ• Incorrect use of a normal joint - A healthy joint being used in the wrong way will wear and develop arthritis much faster. Your dog will use their joints incorrectly as a result of compensation or micro trauma and this is where massage is vital. Correcting the imbalances helps to reduce the load and preserve the joint in early stages or ease the discomfort in the later ones.

πŸ• Trauma - Accidents or operations cause trauma to the joint which may not fully regenerate and so the joint becomes abnormal πŸ‘†πŸ‘†

Massage plays an important role in both slowing the progression of arthritis and managing its effects.

My dog still loves to chase a ball, there can't be anything wrong!

πŸ₯Ž When a dog chases a ball their adrenaline spikes and they go into a high state of arousal.

πŸ₯Ž This state of arousal is meant to be used for survival - catch the prey (ball) and live another day. So when a dog is in this state, any pain they feel is numbed in favour of catching the food to ensure their survival.

πŸ₯Ž It's so powerful that dogs will continue to run after the ball even with significant injuries or compromised gaits and unfortunately this is something I see regularly.

So this is why we don't use ball chasing as a measure of comfort.

If your dog stops chasing the ball it's because even with the adrenaline they physically can't do it anymore and we want to detect and heal or manage problems before that happens.

Want to keep your dog comfortable and ready for action? Book an appointment with me - I'd love to help ❀️

If you are a πŸ•terrierπŸ•, it's your duty to police your immediate surroundings, make sure everyone is behaving the way they should and give them all a telling off regardless!

If like this little guy πŸ‘‡ you are instead reluctant to leave the house and refuse to let your beloved family touch you then there is a problem.

A vet check to make sure there's nothing serious going on and it's time for treatment!

He unsurprisingly refuses to give me consent to work with him initially but with some negotiation and a lot of compromise we build some trust.

Following treatment he's back to being "an absolute pain in the bum" success! - and my apologies

If your dog has stopped being a nuisance book an appointment with me, I'd love to help ❀

🐢 Dogs with back discomfort will often prefer to lie on hard surfaces for more support (tiny dogs like to squidge themselves into dents in soft furnishings)

🐢 No-one likes having a sore back, it can make them understandably anxious or grumpy but most dogs are reasonable and respond well to quiet, gentle, patient handling and knowledgeable treatment

🐢 In my experience, grumpiness vanishes the instant they are more comfortable and anxiety subsides as they re-learn to trust their body

πŸšΆβ€β™€οΈIn the words of my mother after I treated her leg - "I keep waiting for that horrible pain and it never comes"πŸ€Έβ€β™€οΈ

Noone likes to think that their dog is uncomfortable but recognising it means that you can help to relieve it

People often only recognise problems when they are acute (requires veterinary care) and obvious such as screaming or limping πŸ’₯😫

So what does chronic (long term) discomfort look like?πŸ₯Ί
Changes in posture - so for example if your dog has an arthritic knee they won't hold it up or limp they will just shift their weight onto a different leg
Changes in movement - the same dog might still run and play but they will use the sore knee less, leading to using other muscles and joints incorrectly
Changes in behaviour - when things get too uncomfortable your dog may become slow, grumpy or lose their sparkle (seeing this come back is my favourite part of my job)

The longer chronic discomfort goes on the more it spreads, eventually leading to a dog who is stiff, with dull eyes and a lowered head, their lack of mobility leading to sores and extra health problems. Their guardian questioning if their dog's quality of life is still good enough

Chronic discomfort in its earlier stages is very subtle and hard to recognise so if you think your dog might be uncomfortable, then they most likely are.
Bodywork can be used to prevent it from worsening or in many cases, restore their movement so well that they revert to their younger selves

If your dog is in the later stages of mobility issues and you're asking yourself if it's too late - please talk to me, most of the dogs I care for wouldn't still be here without their treatments ❀️
