Thought this is a very informative video to share on what to do if your dog has heatstroke (especially with highs of 33°C in some places over the bank holiday weekend) But here are some signs that your dog has heatstroke, so you know when to jump into action;

• Heavy or excessive panting
• Thick drool or excessive salivation
• Bright red, dark red, or pale gums
• Rapid heartbeat
• Weakness, lethargy, or stumbling
• Vomiting or diarrhea
• Glazed eyes or confusion
• Refusing to move or collapsing
• Seizures or unconsciousness in severe cases

☀️ HOT WEATHER NOTICE ☀️

With temperatures set to be much higher next week, I’ll be moving all group walks to earlier morning slots to help keep the dogs safe and comfortable in the heat. 🐾

As much as the dogs love their walks, exercising in the middle of the day during hot weather can quickly become dangerous and increase the risk of heat stroke.

To help keep everyone cool:
💧 Small amounts of fresh water will be offered regularly to each dog throughout the walk to avoid gulping large amounts as this can cause bloat (much more likely to happen in the heat)
🧊 Cooling pads will be in every crate in my van to stay extra cool (along with the 12v fan and vent)
🐕 Dogs will be encouraged to stay calm and relaxed during walks to avoid overheating from overexcitement and excessive running.

Signs of heat stroke in dogs can include:
⚠️ Excessive panting
⚠️ Drooling more than usual
⚠️ Lethargy or weakness
⚠️ Bright red gums
⚠️ Vomiting or diarrhoea
⚠️ Wobbling or collapse

Prevention is always better than treatment, so please also avoid walking dogs on hot pavements and make sure they always have access to shade and water at home. If you’re unsure whether it’s too hot, place the back of your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds - if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for their paws!

As I’m sure a lot of my horsey followers already know, good flatwork is the foundation of your jumping. But flatwork doesn’t mean just riding around in a 4 beat canter and calling it collection😆 that is not how you will better your horses strength nor your jumping!

You need to ride that canter forward and into the contact as if you’re jumping around a course. How can you expect a clear round if the only time you ask for a proper forward canter is in the ring?

Ask yourself:
– Are they truly forward off my leg?
– Are they light, but still consistent in the contact?
– Could I comfortably approach a small jump in this canter?

I’m not saying you do this every flat work session but you’ve got to keep in mind what we ask of them in the ring and apply that into your training at home.💪🏅
