The Puppy Nanny at Contented Canines Training School Helping you raise a happy, well-behaved pup 🐾

Based in Glossop | Run by Nicola Davies The Puppy Nanny.

My name is Nicola Davies, puppy training expert a.k.a. I’m also Mum to Thomas aged 13, and Pet-Mum to Pippi the German Shepherd, and Martha and Kwazi the cats. I love yoga and cuddling up with a good book, and I love our beautiful planet earth and the great outdoors! I actually wasn’t ever supposed to work with dogs! I grew up in a village rural Lincolnshire, the oldest of 7 (yes 7!) children, and

spent most of my spare time drawing and painting. When it came to career choices I decided to take a degree in Architecture. After a few years working in architecture my life completely changed when in 2005 we welcomed a little black ball of Labrador fluff into our home – Joey arrived! Although I had grown up with family dogs I quickly realised I was completely out of my depth and knew nothing about puppies. I loved him to bits but I quickly realised I needed a lot more than love to raise a puppy. So I started taking him to dog training classes and I loved it. I travelled around the country working with different dog trainers learning different training techniques, and in my spare time I started reading everything I could find about dogs, dog training and behaviour. This went from being a hobby to an obsession, and I went from studying to setting up my own puppy training classes, and eventually leaving the world of Architecture completely behind. What I Do

That was over 10 years ago and I now run a successful dog training and walking business in North West England. During the day I visit clients in their own homes to help them to train their puppies and dogs with my Puppy Home Training Package, or to take care of the training and socialisation for them with my Puppy Nanny Service. Then in the evenings I teach my popular Perfect Puppy Course to puppy owners from the local area and beyond! Who Can I Help

Brand new puppy parents, or soon-to-be puppy parents
Experienced dog owners who haven’t had a puppy in a while
Busy parents with a demanding young family I can help
Hard-working professional out at work all day
New puppy parents who just want the best start in life for their precious pup

Why Choose Me

I’m passionate about puppies. I know they are adorable, right? But they grow up into dogs, and dogs are even better than puppies. It’s true! Best friends, confidantes, comforters and companions. Cuddlers and exercise buddies. Personal trainers and matchmakers. Caring protectors. Simply put, dogs make our lives better. And if we give our puppies the perfect start, they will grow up to be perfect dogs. I firmly believe that proper puppy training and socialisation is the recipe for the dog of your dreams. I also believe that proper puppy training and socialisation could significantly reduce the frustrating, stressful and upsetting training and behavioural problems which lots of our pet dogs end up suffering from. I also take a comprehensive approach to all of my puppy training which involves the whole family. It takes a village to raise a child, and it takes a whole family on the same page to raise the perfect puppy! I’m not just training the puppy, I’m working with you and your family too!

Back to School Top Tips: Reset the Routine!

Dogs thrive on structure, and September is the perfect time to rebuild calm, predictable days.

You might have had holidays over the Summer, or the kids might have been off school. Our dogs love having us around more, but changes in routine can stress them out!

Here are 3 simple things you can start straight away that will help:

1️⃣ Morning Walk every day - gives dogs the chance to sniff and toilet and makes them more likely to be happy and settled when home alone

2️⃣ Independent Play activities - provide filled Kongs and Licki Mats so that our dogs have something fun to do whilst we are out or busy

3️⃣ Background Noise - leave the TV or radio on for them for company and to mask any noises outside that might stress our dogs out.

Need some help getting your dog’s behaviour back on track?

Our Brand New Autumn term starts this week with my Perfect Puppy Course, so I've been Back to School shopping - but for dogs, not kids!

I paid a visit to our local pet shop to stock up on essentials for the new school term.

So what did I get?

1. A Classic Kong - the original and best! Perfect for filling with goodies to keep your dog happy when left home alone or settled in training classes

2. A Halti Training lead - I'm not on commission for these, but they are my absolute favourite leads. Comfy on the hands, adjustable, and they wash really well!

3. 5m Recall Line - an essential safety tool for recall training when you start to practise around distractions

4. Cute treat pouch - so that we can reward our dogs quickly when they do something good - timing is everything!

5. Healthy natural treats - great for filling your Kong and for training, and full of natural ingredients so you know they won't upset your dogs tummy.

Let me know what you've got for your dog!

It’s that time of year again — back to school for the kids, or starting at college for us… this is the first year for 12 years that I haven't been school uniform shopping, as Thomas starts a new adventure at college. (Although I do get to go stationary shopping instead - which fills me with joy!)

But is it back to school for our dogs, too?!

As our days start to get busier and we’re out of the house more, our dogs can find the change a little tricky. After all, they’ve loved having us around for extra cuddles, playtime, and walks. (Pippi has really enjoyed snoozing in the bedroom with Thomas while I've been out at work)

But with a little planning, we can help our dogs feel happy and confident with the new routine.

Think of it as helping your dog “get ready for school” too. Here are some easy ways to set them up for success:

1. Create a cosy “classroom” space – A comfy bed or crate in a quiet spot with favourite toys or chews makes for a perfect chill-out zone.

2. Give them homework – Puzzle toys, stuffed Kongs, or snuffle mats are great for keeping their brains busy while you’re out.

3. Play calming background noise – A radio or TV on low can make them feel less alone.

4. Plan quality time – Walks, games, or short training sessions when you’re home help balance their day.

5. Build their confidence – Practice short absences first, then gradually increase the time you’re away so they adjust smoothly.

Helping your dog feel prepared for the “new term” will make the transition easier for everyone — and keep tails wagging all season long.

How a black labrador puppy changed my life!...

Hi I’m Nicola!

I’ve got a confession to make…

I wasn’t supposed to work with dogs.

That wasn’t how my career path had been planned out.
