𝗕𝗹𝘂𝗲𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗲-𝟯 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘆! 🙌

Bluetongue viruses naturally follow a 3-5 year disease progression. The case numbers increase during the first year, reach high levels of disease and spread in the second and then reduce in the third and subsequent years once immunity in the national herd/flock has reached a high enough level (>80%).

The decision we have is how much damage we let it do in the meantime.

Animals exposed to infection will develop a natural immunity which is normally lifelong. The price for natural immunity in your herd/flock is the production losses and mortality.

We can also give immunity by vaccination which has been shown to be very effective. This immunity won’t be lifelong, but it should protect the animal for the relevant timeframe, and the price is just £2.50+VAT per dose. That’s a lot cheaper than 9 weeks of milk production loss, or birth of even one non-viable beef calf, or 20% mortality in your flock.

If enough people vaccinate this year, we probably won’t need to do it again next year. 💉
