Prioritising Equine Welfare with Professional Osteopathic Care

As equine professionals, our highest responsibility is to the welfare and wellbeing of the horses in our care. Every horse deserves to move freely, live comfortably, and be supported by handlers and practitioners who understand their physical and emotional needs.

Equine osteopathy is a powerful tool in maintaining and enhancing a horse’s performance, comfort, and overall quality of life. Through gentle, hands-on techniques, we aim to restore balance, improve mobility, and address the root causes of tension or dysfunction—always with respect for the individual horse.

But beyond technique, professionalism matters. This means:
✔️ Collaborating with vets and other professionals
✔️ Staying educated and evidence-informed
✔️ Putting the horse’s welfare before ego or trends
✔️ Maintaining clear, respectful communication with clients
✔️ Upholding ethical standards at all times

Let’s continue raising the bar for care, compassion, and competence in the equine world. Because at the heart of everything we do, it’s all about the horse.

I take pride in being thorough, calm and honest. I don’t rush sessions.

I assess movement, feel and behaviour carefully and adapt my approach depending on the horse in front of me.

If I believe something needs Veterinary input or further investigation, I will always recommend that because my role is not to diagnose , but to support soundness, well being and longevity through the lens of functional movement.

I have been using and trialling the Gait Analysis system for a while now and it was especially useful for me when Quest decided to go lame 🤦‍♀️ He was fully assessed by a lameness specialist first and a plan put in place. I utilised the Gait Analysis to monitor and track his progress objectively as we all know how rational I am with my own horses 😂

The biggest argument for using objective gait analysis when assessing horses lies in the physiological limitations of the human eye. These very sensitive measurements detect asymmetries invisible to the naked eye, increasing precision in lameness diagnostics and supporting early detection of issues.

I’ve included a few pictures of his analysis and he is now totally sound and not giving his mother heart failure! 🙌

Please contact me if you would like to objectively assess your horses movement to monitor performance, rehabilitation or just out of interest.

What Is Osteopathy and what does it mean for you?

This post is prompted by a post I saw this week where someone was looking for recommendations for a therapist to 'look at and treat' their horses back. The reality is that few horsey folk really understand the difference between therapeutic modalities and it's really our job as practitioners to keep the wider Equine Community informed of the differences.

So, here goes from my perspective.......

Unless you have experienced Osteopathy first hand, then it is very difficult to understand the difference between Osteopathy and other manual therapies.

The rich tapestry that is Osteopathy is an exciting and rewarding part of my job alongside working with a multidisciplinary team for the benefit of the health and welfare of your horse.

Osteopathy is a Philosophy, a Science and an Art. By embracing the unity of the body structures and their functionality we can work towards good health.
Its main emphasis is on structural and functional integrity of the WHOLE BODY. There is much more to take into consideration over and above the back!!
Many diseases and dysfunctions are caused by abnormalities within the physical structures and subsequent function of the horse.

Thorough training and practical examination are crucial. A horses well-being depends on skilled professionals who understand their anatomy and can apply osteopathic techniques effectively. It's essential for ensuring their health and performance.

It is the job of a well trained Equine Osteopath through a recognised system of assessment, which leads to a list of differentials and a working hypothesis. From these findings it will lead me to an appropriate treatment and management plan. We aim to ‘regain the normal’ to improve health and subsequent homeostasis of the body.

If we merely look to treat a symptom, we may never find the cause. It is through an in depth understanding of functional anatomy and physiology that will lead an Osteopath to its list possible primary causes of the symptom that we may be seeing.

Those that know me well, will know that it is ALL about the assessment process, otherwise how do we know what we are doing and why we are doing it??

A wise Osteopath once told me ‘Find it, Fix it, Move on!’

If you would like to know more about how Osteopathy may help your horse, then please do contact me.

Having been in the industry for so many years, you get to meet and catch up with those you have worked alongside in the same area for this amount of time.
So, whilst at the top end of Market Rasen today, it was lovely to catch up with Your4Legs! We’ve not seen each other for several years so was great to have a quick natter 🙌

There is very limited space left in Sept so if you are looking to book in, then please message me sooner rather than later! Those of you that already have, your on my plan 🤗

Something I’ve learned recently……. You don’t need to be the loudest voice to make a difference, just consistent, committed and honest about what you do.

I’ve been helping horses move better and recover stronger for functionality and longevity across Lincolnshire for many years now, with a blend of Osteopathy, Rehabilitation and a strong foundation of Nutrition and Welfare.

If you’re new to my page, this is me, Lucy Makepeace, and I work on a one to one basis with horse owners to bring their horses the support that they need to thrive.

Thank you to every owner who trusts me with their horses, it means more than you will ever know.
