Rupert and his Emotional Support Penguin. 🐧🐧🐧

Rupert has been visiting the excellent team The Renew Centre today to have a Functional MRI. He struggles with pain, which affects his behaviour (he has been called Mr Bitey Face a time or two due to it), and Lisa is on a long journey with the vets to find the source of the pain.

Unfortunately, this hasn't been a straightforward task, and Rupert's case is proving to be quite complex. (Lisa will be sharing his story soon).

Rupert also struggles going to the vet, as he can get anxious and stressed, which means he has medication to help him remain calm, and Lisa always ensures Mr Penguin goes with him. Not only does Mr Penguin hang out with Rupert at the vets, but he travels in the car with him too.

Mr Penguin has been with Rupert since he arrived with Lisa, and he gets a lot of comfort from this toy. Rupert loves to cuddle him, play, hold and sleep with him. Having this toy with him also helps Rupert stay calm in situations and locations that could be too tough for him to cope with.

Does your dog have an emotional support toy, blanket, or something else? share in the comments.

Unlock Your Dog's Potential Through Understanding

The key to your dog's progress isn't just about training techniques—it's about understanding. Just like us, a dog learns most effectively when they feel secure and supported.

When your dog feels truly seen and heard, it sets the stage for success. This sense of security allows trust to blossom, which is the foundation of any strong partnership. When trust is in place, your dog becomes a willing participant in the learning process, ready to engage with you.

Consider your dog's emotional state. If they are anxious or feel misunderstood, their capacity for learning is severely limited. Their focus is on their discomfort, not on your guidance. But when they feel safe and confident, their mind is free to focus and learn.

Therefore, successful behaviour modification depends not only on the methods you use but also on your commitment to patience, empathy, and building a foundation of mutual trust. Ultimately, an emotionally secure and well-understood dog is one who is primed to learn and flourish.

When I start working with my clients, they do see some great, fast results, but I'm always honest about one thing: real behaviour change takes time.

Honesty is why many of my clients and professional relationships have lasted for years.

My ethos is all about building that trust and connection with dog guardians. When we have a strong relationship, we can truly help your dog. It also allows us to have the tough conversations should they arise.

To learn from each other and understand each other better, that’s what makes the real difference.
