Are you a bird owner? Here exotics vet Mabel provides us with a simple trained behaviour that can be used to help bird owners monitor their pets health at home. Isn't T.J. handsome?

This is T.J. an African Grey parrot. His owner has taught him to stand on the lid of a coffee jar so he can be weighed regularly to ensure he is maintaining a healthy weight. It is a skill that can be easily taught to all parrots, and a really simple but very important way to monitor their health.

We love to share pet owner's top tips and tricks, or interesting stories, especially if we have a photo to go alongside it. If you have any such stories you would like us to share, please get in touch!

Blue-green algae can be toxic to dogs. ☢️

It may appear as scum or green paint on the surface of ponds or lakes, but even a small amount can cause dogs to become seriously ill. Keep them out of water that looks suspicious, and always check for warning signs when out on walks.

Dog and cat owners - have you ever been baffled by the number of different pet foods on the supermarket shelf, or even nowadays, the number of online companies with marketing suggesting every other pet food is just rubbish? It can feel like you need a degree in animal nutrition just to navigate the validity of these claims, or indeed, interpret a food label.

Luckily the British Veterinary Association, who represent the veterinary profession including giving information to the public, have created a handy online resource on their website. This guidance provides a lot of information on how to feed dogs and cats, covering various types of diets, but also highlights areas where further research is desired.

Recommendations also contain links to other dietary resources and scientific papers from organisations such as the BSAVA, WSAVA and Food Standards Agency. It's a great place to get started.

Our vets are also happy to help you with nutrition enquiries.

We know cat and dog owners want to keep their pets happy and healthy, but choosing the right diet for them can be hard. How do you cut through the marketing claims and biased information to choose a diet which suits you and your pet?

We are delighted to have received 2 nominations in the PetPlan Veterinary Awards 2025.

Firstly, our lovely Deputy Nursing Manager Selina has been nominated for Vet Nurse of the Year award - congratulations to Selina. Selina is a diligent and caring nurse who works a lot with our exotics patients and is excellent and organising the vets. She also works a lot with stock management and the lab equipment.

We have also received a clinic nomination in the Practice of the Year category.

We are very grateful to those who have put forward our team for these awards. The nominations alone are really rewarding to us. Thank you.
