Since I was young I’ve loved animals — both learning about and taking care of them. I began working as a full-time Pet Care Provider in 2019 and now have the opportunity to share my love of animals with my clients and pet owners around the Wirral area. I pride myself on the high-standard of care and services that I offer. I have a number of clients who have become more like family, and customers w

Yesterday we had to say goodbye to Jeremy, my Beanie Bob. I still can't believe you're gone. Devastated and heart broken don't even begin to describe how I feel. Miss you so much my little squish, my daddy long legs. You were such a good boy, go and catch as many mice and magpies as you want over the rainbow bridge. It won't be the same without you

The hot summer weather has arrived and along with it comes the seasonal debate on " Should I shave my dog's coat this summer?"

If you own a breed of dog that has a double coat ( German Shepherd Dogs, Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, Australian Shepherds, and Siberian Huskies, Malamutes and other northern breeds) then the answer is resoundingly NO, you should NOT seasonally shave these dogs in an effort to make them cooler.

So very sad to know that there are some Vets and groomers out there who are so ignorant about this subject that they advocate shaving for these dogs.

A double coated dog's outer coat is designed to create an air pocket to trap cool air and to protect its skin from the burning rays of the hot sun. If you shave these breeds of dogs, you are taking away the only protection their skin has from the hot sun. Additionally, when you shave the fur off of a double coated breed dog, the new coat that grows in may come in patchy and damaged. As well, shaving could unwittingly cause allopecia ( a condition where the hair follicles are no longer able to produce hair) meaning that your dog now will not be able to fully grow back their winter coats.

So please, there are other ways to keep double coated dogs cool in the summer heat without shaving off their coats. Do make sure you that you comb out the insulating undercoat to help facilitate air circulation to the skin and body. Removing this undercoat will help your dog feel cooler in the warmer summer temperatures.

LIPSTICK PEEK-A-BOO

Those of us with male dogs might be all too familiar with the sudden appearance of the colloquially named “lipstick" or "red rocket" as it’s commonly known.

This seems to happen at the most inappropriate times and may leave us feeling embarrassed and believe that our dog only has one thing on their mind!

It’s natural to assume that this display must be related to sexual arousal and yes, it is related to arousal, but it’s generally not sexual arousal.

Arousal is also not necessarily about excitement and may be triggered by a host of other emotions.

The same applies to hu***ng – although both males and females may hump. Hu***ng is commonly seen in a dog that is over aroused.

There are many emotions linked to arousal - see my post about hu***ng here – bit.ly/405MMqm - for more information.

Unless there is a suspected medical reason or your dog is doing this frequently, it’s not usually something to be concerned about.

Ignore it, don’t pay attention or make a fuss and it should soon go back into the tube!

Very often, behaviour is not about the way it looks, but the way we perceive it from our human perspective and how it makes us feel.
