I wish more people knew…
Myth 1: If you have female and male dogs in the same house you must get them neutered to prevent unwanted pregnancies.
Truth: YOU must be the one who puts practices in place to ensure the welfare and safety of your dogs. Responsible practices include physical separation, herbal support for both sexes and changes in routine and structure.
Myth 2: Neutering and/or medication is the only way to prevent phantom pregnancies and support their seasons.
Truth: Herbs like raspberry leaf has been shown to prevent the onset of phantom pregnancies when used throughout your dog’s season. Raspberry leaf contains fragarine, tannins, iron, calcium, magnesium and vitamins A, B, C and E that all aid in supporting the uterus, reproductive organs and hormones.
Myth 3: If my female dog is not spayed she will get a pyometra infection
Truth: There is a risk of pyometra in intact females, but a healthy gut & microbiome will assist in normal and adequate immune function, including dealing with any abnormalities in bacteria in the uterus should they arise. Sufficient exercise, wholesome nutrition and good mental health maintains balance in the immune system and natural resistance to infection & disease. Your dog will also show signs of pyometra if she has one which will let you know when to take her to the vet.
Myth 4: Spaying is the only option
Truth: Being proactive in managing their seasons means you can be a responsible pet parent without having any surgery. Other surgeries such as tubal ligation are available that leave the sexual organs intact but still remove the risk of pregnancy whilst avoiding the detrimental impacts of removing the reproductive organs & hormones if you feel it’s absolute.
Myth 5: Spaying my dog will reduce her risk of developing cancer
Truth 5: In 2024 The World Small Animal Veterinary Association published guidelines advising AGAINST neutering of all dogs and now recommend that pet parents adopt responsible practices instead. Research over the last decade shows that removing the reproductive organs & hormones has direct links to the development of diseases like cancer, cruciate problems & hormone issues.
