I certainly had my Big Brave Pants on to do this!! 🙈🫣 Majorly out of my comfort zone, I'm much happier covered in mud, hay, hair and hiding behind the four-legged furries 🐴🐶
Thank you to Hilary and Rebecca for inviting me for a glass of 🍷 and a chat.

For anyone that hasn't yet heard of Big Brave Pants, it's a fantastic, supportive group for horsey people, founded by these two lovely ladies. It doesn't matter what your level, ability or ambition is, this is a welcoming and encouraging group.

I haven't managed to watch it back, I might need an extra 🍷 (or two 🍷) 🤣

❓️Do you have routine dental checks?❓️

Calypso had her annual dental check up with her vaccination in January. Beth picked up that she has developed 109 mesial infundibular caries. Whilst not currently causing any issue or impacting any sensitive structures, if left untreated, could result in a fractured tooth. It has likely developed due to her age.

A couple of weeks later, Nicky came out to give her a filling. 🔨🦷 It was fascinating to see inside the mouth with the oroscope and see the process in action. The cavity was deeper than expected and Nicky took her time to make sure it was fully cleaned out. 🤩

Here is a little video of the initial diagnosis (first picture) followed by the cleaning out process and the final input of resin composite.

🦷It's important to have regular dental checks to not only keep the horse comfortable but pick up and anything before it can cause a problem or discomfort.

Here are a few reasons your horse may need a dental check:

🐴 It's been over a year since there last one. (Recommended 6-12 months)

🐴 You have a young horse starting ridden work or begining work with a bit.

🐴 struggling to eat /quidding.

🐴 reluctance to have the bridle on, struggling with or not accepting the contact. Head tilting. There may be a drop in performance.

🐴 any facial swelling or excess saliva.

You may find dental discomfort could be affecting other areas of the body! 🧐

I may be under 10 layers of clothing 🥶 but I spotted a little surprise rainbow 🌈 this morning!
January has been busy so far with MOTs and check ups.
Make sure you and your animals are staying warm in this weather ❄️!

Some key reminders:
👉Offer some warm water or mash when you can to make sure they staying hydrated.
👉 Gentle movement when possible to keep things mobile.
👉 Allow some extra time to warm up and cool down.

Happy Equestrian Christmas day!
The moment we've all been waiting for...a bit of extra daylight (even if it is only a minute to start with!) 🐴

On occasion, I do question my life choices....🤣🫣🌧

Squeezing in a quick leg stretch inbetween appointments with half an hour of daylight. The best pair of ears to be behind on a day like this!! 🤎🐴

Back home 🏡 after another brilliant CPD day at the IRVAP Annual Conference.

Some really interesting talks and speakers, providing more food for thought and considerations for how we approach practice, along with some research updates. 🤓

A little throw back to our arena walks at the Petplan dressage champs last week and some food for thought.....
How can you add a bit of variety and suppling work in?

The early morning arena walks were not only a great opportunity for a leg stretch after being stabled and arena desensitisation but you can also:

🐴 use the markers and flowers to do some serpentines.

🐴 use the makers and flowers to leg yeild in and out of (I didn't quite manage to video this one one-handed 🤣)

🐴 some shoulder in/quarters in.

🐴 use the corners for quarter turn walk pirouette steps

🐴 the occasional halt (if nobody is directly behind you)

🐴 changing from free walk to Medium walk and back again

Do you consider adding variety into your walk work out hacking? Or during your walk warm up in the arena?
Maybe this Winter, consider adding some lateral walk work into your programme. It can be in hand or ridden.

P.s I'm very lucky my 🐴 isn't in need of the desensitisation so much 🤎. But sometimes having a little focus or patterns you are used to doing, can help with relaxation in a strange environment.
