Dogs Will Be Dogs – and that is kind of the point

Spaniels are going to hunt.
Collies are going to herd.
Beagles are going to sniff.
Terriers are going to chase.

Our dogs are always going to do the things they were genetically designed and bred to do.

Brenin, for example, puts things in his mouth — constantly. Sometimes because I’ve asked him to, sometimes because he thinks it’s a great idea all by himself. Right now, as I type, he’s proudly parading around with a toilet roll tube he just fished out of the bin!

That’s not him being “naughty” — that’s a spaniel being a spaniel. Generations of breeding have shaped spaniels to pick up, carry, flush, and retrieve. The same way collies have been shaped to herd, retrievers to carry, dachshunds to dig, and German shepherds to guard.

Whether they live in a working home or a pet home, those drives don’t disappear. They will come out one way or another. Our job as humans is to make sure those needs have safe, appropriate outlets. Because when they don’t… that’s when frustration kicks in. That’s when collies herd cars, spaniels steal plant pots, and bored dogs make their own “fun.”

So often when I work with clients, the first question I ask is: why is this dog doing that? Usually the answer is: because that’s what they were bred to do. And when we meet those needs — through training, play, enrichment, or sports like Hoopers, canicross, or scent work — those “problems” ease.

It’s not about shutting down who our dogs are. It’s about giving them an outlet that works for both them and us. That’s why I’m such a big advocate of dog sports and enrichment. They’re fun, safe, structured ways to give your dog what they were born to love — and when that need is met, the rest of life together becomes easier and happier.

I don’t often share before-and-after videos… but this one really deserves a spot!

Meet Digby — a big, strong working-line Labrador with a heart of gold and a lot of enthusiasm for life. His humans had done a brilliant job laying the foundations for lead walking, but they were struggling with that final piece: staying consistent around distractions and in different environments.

So, we took a step back and looked at the bigger picture.
We made a few tweaks to Digby’s exercise routine, making sure his physical and mental needs were being properly met alongside his training. And the difference has been incredible.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve been out walking from his home, gradually proofing his skills in real-world settings — and he’s absolutely smashing it. 🙌

We’ve even had locals stop to comment on how much calmer and more focused he looks compared to before. That’s always such a special moment!

Last week, we did a handover session with his mum so she could take over the reins (literally). She did brilliantly — and the two of them are now walking together with so much more confidence and teamwork.

Huge well done to Digby and his lovely mum — you’ve both worked so hard for this. 💚

I get asked all the time about food and feeding. What do I feed, how and why? So here it is and here’s my why.

⬇️

🧠 What the science says:
Research into the canine microbiome (that’s the community of bacteria and microorganisms living in your dog’s gut) shows that dogs fed a fresh, varied diet have:
• Healthier chemical balances that influence behaviour
• Stronger immune systems
• Longer lives — in some studies, years longer

When we feed fresh food, we’re not just topping up vitamins. We’re supporting the gut-brain axis — the direct link between digestion and emotional regulation. A healthy gut supports calmer, more balanced behaviour.

Think of your dog’s microbiome like socialisation for their insides: small, positive exposures to variety (different proteins, textures, even a bit of dirt!) build resilience and long-term health.

🐾 What I do:
I feed half raw, half kibble — it gives me flexibility.
When I’ve got more time, I’ll build a meal with fresh veg, an egg, or some leftovers to make it more interesting.
On busier days, kibble keeps things easy — but I still rehydrate it to take the strain off their kidneys and keep that moisture content up.
They get daily supplements to support their overall health.
Natural treats and chews to add more variety to their diets.

It doesn’t have to be perfect.
It just has to be thoughtful.
And the difference you’ll see in your dog’s energy, digestion and focus is so worth it.

A few weeks ago, I met up with a friend and her dog. Her lovely pooch had been chemically castrated since I’d last seen him, and the difference was striking. He’d put on a fair bit of weight, like… a lot.

It’s a change I see a lot after neutering chemical castrating. Hormonal changes can slow metabolism, alter appetite, and even change coat texture slowly over time and sometimes you just don’t see it.

But here’s the thing: the feeding guidelines on the back of your food packet don’t tell you this. They don’t know your dog, or what their body is going through.

Why does this matter? Because extra weight isn’t just about appearance — it puts stress on joints, reduces stamina, and can even shorten a dog’s life.

💡 Here are some ways to keep on top of it:
• Body condition scoring: Run your hands over your dog’s ribs — can you feel them without pressing? That’s a good sign. If you can’t, it may be time to rethink food portions.
• Vet weigh-ins: Most vets are happy for you to pop in and use the scales. A quick monthly check can make all the difference.
• Adjust portions after neutering: Many dogs need less food once their hormones change.
• Swap fillers: If your dog seems hungry, add low-calorie fillers like chopped veggies. They bulk out meals without piling on calories.
• Daily food as training rewards: Use some of their daily food for training, and keep higher-value treats small.

Weight gain doesn’t have to creep up unnoticed. With a few tweaks and regular checks, you can keep your dog fit, comfortable, and happy — whatever life stage they’re at.

P.S I did tactfully tell my friend I’d noticed the weight gain.

‘F*** me, he got a bit chunky didn’t he?!’ Is tactful right?

If you’re struggling with toilet training your puppy, you’re definitely not alone! It’s one of the most common challenges for new puppy owners, and it takes time.

A few tips that really help:
🐾 Routine is everything – regular trips outside (after meals, naps, and play).
🐾 Praise in the moment – reward your pup the second they go in the right place.
🐾 Supervision indoors – or use safe spaces like pens/crates to prevent sneaky accidents.
🐾 Clean thoroughly – lingering scent encourages repeat mistakes.

And the biggest tip? Patience. No puppy gets it right overnight. Progress comes with consistency.
