A lovely day spent Brixington Primary Academy summer Fayre to educate children how to be safe around dogs. With dog numbers and bites on the rise teaching children how to be safe around dogs is super important!
It’s amazing how many of the younger children thought the picture of the snarling chihuahua was being friendly and smiling 😬 if you’re a teacher or leader of any youth group that you think may benefit from some educational talks on dog safety PM me 😊🐾
So proud of Kash this weekend. Kash is not an easy dog. There are days he has me questioning everything.
Well this weekend I was beaming. Ok so he only came out near the end when it was pack up time but there were still dogs around, loud music and people interacting with him and he was amazing. Even in the van with noisy off lead dogs next to it he was calm and didn’t join in the barking. When he came out he wasn’t hyper vigilant he was calm, able to engage with me and enjoyed having a roll which is a big deal for him to let his guard down in an environment like this.
When we have difficult dogs we can really dwell on the not so good bits. We grieve the dog we dreamed of or compare to all those around us. But a bit like our British weather the good bits glimmer through clouds like a ray of sunshine ☀️ Reactive dogs aren’t bad dogs, they don’t need punishment, if anything they need a little bit more support ✌🏻

Well Woofstock UK was a blast. What better weekend than hanging out with some of my fave peeps Speak Dog with Ruth Haynes and Jemal Spence and meeting loads of people and their dogs. I didn’t get time to take many pics!
Loved doing our talks and teaching people and helping answer questions. Myself and my own dogs are exhausted and I so hope to do it all again next year. ❤️🐶

Often when our four legged friends become poorly the advice is to offer chicken and rice. Although yes it is bland rice doesn’t hold much nutritional value nor is it very easily digested. So here’s some alternatives…..
🍗Turkey / white fish / tripe…. All easily digestible proteins. Gently cooked.
🍄🟫 Portobello mushrooms…. Fibrous and aids digestion. Promotes the growth of good bacteria as well as naturally boosting their immunity.
🫚Ginger root…. Can relieve nausea, ease bloat and has anti inflammatory properties.
🥚Pumpkin / scrambled egg…. Offers some substance a gentle way of easing hunger, easily digestible full of nutrients.
I tend to gently cook my chosen ingredients mixed together and feed depending on needs. It’s important that you still seek veterinary advice as this recipe is not a cure alone but can be a good alternative to chicken and rice.
Last nights Scent squad were amazing! Not only were we making search areas harder, hiding the tiniest bits of Kong but they also worked through some big distractions.
Here’s a search we did next to some kids playing football and as you can see they worked their little noses off 🥰🐶

Here’s some healthy swaps you can make with the treats you may use with your dogs. Often guardians worry about giving treats at all in the fear of their dog gaining weight and yes with some highly processed treats they certainly can! Not only that but processed treats can be detrimental on their health all round.

This weeks group walks were lovely. We did a walk along the new otter estuary paths. All the dogs and their humans did a fab job and all in all a really enjoyable evening ☺️
This weeks Scentwork graduates have all been super stars! These guys have progressed so so much that by the end it was like teaching an experienced class 🤩 Both dogs and humans have worked so hard.
I can’t wait to see these guys in future lessons and of course scent squad 😊

Another fab morning introducing some more dogs and their people to Canicross. These guys were great and I can’t wait to see their Canicross journeys. In the session we talk about all the safety aspects aswell as trialing bits of equipment and thinking about the cues we would use. The weather even this morning was a bit toasty so we kept it short and shady with lots of breaks. Keep your eyes peeled for the next one. Sometimes this job as a dog trainer/ behaviourist can be hard. Some people want quick fixes and perfect dogs. Sometimes time and effort isn’t the route some want to take. Then these absolute rays of sunshine come through and make my passion burn stronger than ever. Leo and his dog Woody came to my children’s classes a little while ago. He wanted to teach Woody an orbit. At the time Woody didn’t have a huge amount of rear end awareness. He’s since persevered and check them out now. What little superstars! Admin day today. Sorting my diary for next year so keep your eyes peeled for new classes, workshops and 1-2-1’s. Can we just appreciate this little dude chilling. He’s been with us for almost a year now. When he first joined our family he was a whirlwind with no off switch at all. Like seriously he was non stop. I used to do admin stood up 😂 but now he appreciates the comfort and snuggles of a warm sofa. We still have many things to work on but I can more than appreciate the in house calmness 😅

I am an Exmouth based Dog Behaviourist covering Devon. I have been qualified since 2014 and I am a full associate member of the Canine Behaviour Centre. I am also certified in emergency dog first aid and also hold a diploma in animal grooming so you know that your pooch in safe hands. I use a positive approach and canine enrichment to strengthen the bond between dog and owner.
My aim is to help you and your family live in harmony with your four legged friend and understand the reasons behind any unwanted behaviours. About Me Section
My name Is Dawn and I am qualified as a dog phycologist and a full associate member of the Canine Behaviour Centre. I am also qualified in emergency canine first aid and animal grooming. I constantly strive to broaden my knowledge when it comes to animals and have taken part in positive reinforcement workshops and continuously study canine anatomy and behaviour as well as other animals.
I have lived in Devon my whole life and I am a true country girl at heart. I live with my Husband, 2 children, 3 Dogs, 4 chickens, 2 budgies and I also share a horse at a local force free riding school. Animals are one of my biggest passions and I have individual and very different bonds with each and every animal in my life.
I don’t aim to control my animals, I aim to understand them, create a bond and in turn find ways to create wanted behaviours. As a child I used to watch programmes like ‘The Dog whisperer’ and would always feel uncomfortable watching a dog being pushed to submission. Does this type of training work? Yes as a quick, cruel and outright unsafe method.
Can training an animal using force free, positive methods take longer? Sometimes yes but you will have an animal that wants to do what you are asking of them in a much safer and more ethical way. You will also find that you will have a much stronger bond with your animals.
Family is massively important to me and my animals are no exception to this rule. I believe in order for everyone to live in harmony we should learn respect and understanding of one another. This goes for children and as well and teaching the next generation compassion, understanding and respect is something that I am also very passionate about.
