🎉 8 Years of Pip’s Pet Services 🎉

Today marks 8 years since I started Pip’s Pet Services, and I want to take a moment to say a heartfelt THANK YOU.

To every client who has trusted me with their dogs, recommended my services, shared my posts, left reviews, stopped for a chat, asked for advice, or supported my business in any way – thank you. I genuinely couldn’t have done it without you.

Over the years, Pip’s Pet Services has become so much more than I expected. Whether it’s helping you choose the right products, answering training and behaviour questions, discussing nutrition, supporting you through puppyhood, or helping you care for your dog in their senior years, I’m always happy to help wherever I can.

Being part of your dogs’ lives and watching them grow, learn, and thrive is a privilege I never take for granted.

Grooms catch up post 🥳 We were meant to fly away on holiday Friday 5th but on Tuesday I didn’t feel well and ended up in hospital on Wednesday with emergency surgery on Thursday, so although gutted not to have gone away on holiday I’m glad it didn’t happen whilst we were away and it meant I had this last week already diary clear to recover! 😂

Back to it in full flow today 📔 I’ll be messaging those of you due in September over the next few weeks as I work through you all in order of your usual schedule 🐾🛁✂️

Thank you to those of you I had to rearrange etc around hospital appointments and surgery etc, your cooperation is very much appreciated 🌟

🦴 Dog chews can be a bit of a minefield… 🤯

One of the questions I get asked most often is:

🤨❓“What’s the best chew for my dog?”

My answer is usually: it depends on the dog! 🐶

When I’m choosing treats and chews, I tend to look for simple ingredients, minimal processing, and something appropriate for the dog’s size and chewing style. I love dragonfly_products & jrpetproducts 🇬🇧

🐾 The best grooms start with a conversation… not just a photo ✂️

One of my favourite parts of grooming is helping owners find a style that works for their dog 💛

Photos are super helpful, but the best inspiration pictures are ones with a similar coat type, texture and build to your own dog. A style that looks gorgeous on one breed may not work the same on another - and that’s absolutely okay 🐶

I’m always happy to chat through what’s realistic, comfortable, low-maintenance or fluffy and fun ✨

🐾 What Does a Full Groom Involve? 🛁✂️

Most of my grooming sessions last around 1.5 hours. About half of that time is devoted to prepping, bathing, drying, and nail trimming, while the remaining time is spent on styling with clippers and scissors.

However, the exact timing can vary depending on the breed. For example, breeds with double coats like Collies, Labradors, and Retrievers usually need about three-quarters of the session for prep, nails, bathing, and drying—since they require less styling and tend to shed their hair everywhere!

Here’s what prep includes:
- Carefully brushing the coat to find and gently detangle any knots or tangles, ensuring an all-over clean and a relaxing massage during the bath.
- Trimming the nails, and if your dog tolerates it, filing the edges to keep them smooth and less sharp.
- A thorough check for lumps, bumps, skin tags, ticks, or any changes that need attention.

During the bath:
Just like us, I double shampoo! The first wash removes surface dirt, and the second leaves the coat squeaky clean. A clean coat dries faster and styles much more nicely.

Drying:
Not everyone’s favorite part—but some dogs, like in the L’Oréal advert, make it look effortless! I use gentle, slow brushing strokes with my dryers to smooth out the coat, ensuring it’s perfectly prepared for styling. This careful approach helps in achieving an even trim.

Styling:
This is where the clippers and scissors come into play! Every dog is unique, and so is each owner’s lifestyle. I aim to customise each groom to fit your dog’s personality, comfort, and your preferences. If you ever want something different, just ask - your pet's perfect look is my goal!

🐾 Is your dog hesitant about grooming at home? 🐶

Create a dedicated, comfortable space for grooming - whether it's on the floor, a stable table maybe with a yoga mat, or two chairs pushed together. The goal is to have a secure spot where your dog feels safe.

If your dog loves treats, set up a lick mat or keep some treats nearby to encourage positive reinforcement. If they prefer toys, have them ready to blend grooming with gentle play, avoiding overstimulation that might distract them from the task.

Keep grooming sessions short and frequent. Little and often reduces stress for everyone involved.

Divide the grooming into manageable sections - I've shared infographics on this before. Reach out if you'd like a copy. Focus on one section at a time, gradually increasing the duration as your dog learns that regular grooming prevents painful knots and tangles, making the process more pleasant.

Stay calm and patient, and your dog will mirror that calmness. Remember, this is an opportunity for positive bonding, not a battle.

I recommend establishing a specific grooming spot rather than using random places or letting your dog settle next to you for cuddles, as this can make them less trusting of their safe spaces. Dogs trust us to prioritise their well-being, and preserving their safe zones helps maintain that trust.

✨ A little look behind the scenes at Pip’s Pet Services 🐾

My salon may be small, but every part of it has been chosen with your dog’s comfort, safety and wellbeing in mind 💛 From calm handling and quality equipment, to professional products I trust and a peaceful one-to-one environment.

Whether it’s fresh air through the doors or air conditioning keeping the salon comfortable in warmer weather, I always try to create a space where dogs can feel relaxed and secure 🐶✨

I truly believe grooming should never feel rushed, forceful or frightening. It should feel calm, kind and tailored to the individual dog in front of me 🛁✂️

Another week full of gorgeous dogs, waggy tails and a couple of very special birthday girls too 🥳🎂🐾

And wow… what a HOT week it’s been ☀️🍦 While we may love the sunshine, the heat can be really tough on our dogs, especially during grooming appointments.

Thankfully the salon stayed lovely and cool at around 16–18°C thanks to my trusty air conditioning 😎🐶 Keeping dogs comfortable and relaxed is always a priority here at Pip’s Pet Services 💛

This week I’ve had everything from full grooms to teeth cleans and nail trims — and as always, it’s been a pleasure spending time with all your lovely pups ✂️🛁🦷
