🔔Gastric Ulcer Awareness🔔
🐴 During the month of May we are holding our popular "Scope Month" to raise awareness for gastric ulcers in horses.
🧪 Did you know horses can get different types of stomach ulcers?
Gastric ulcers aren’t one-size-fits-all. Here’s a quick breakdown:
🐴 Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome (EGUS) includes two main types:
🔹 1. Squamous Ulcers (ESGD)
* Occur in the upper part of the stomach
* Caused by excess acid splashing onto the unprotected squamous lining
* Common in performance horses, especially during exercise or fasting
🔹 2. Glandular Ulcers (EGGD)
* Found in the lower (glandular) part of the stomach
* Caused by breakdown of the protective mucus barrier
* Linked to stress, NSAIDs (like bute), or impaired blood flow
🩺 Symptoms include poor appetite, girthiness, dull coat, weight loss, and behavioral changes.
📸 Scope to know! Only a gastroscopy can confirm the type and severity of ulcers.
✅ Prevention tips:
✔️ Frequent forage
✔️ Reduce stress
✔️ Careful NSAID use
✔️ Prevent long fasting periods
