As Storm Amy brought strong winds and heavy rain to UK this weekend, it is worth mentioning the risks acorn poisoning can bring to livestock, as large amounts of acorns would be blown from oak trees. Signs to watch for include not eating, passing very dark coloured muck and animals typically die within a couple of days. If they do survive past this point, they will lose weight and struggle with putting it back on. We have seen a few cases so far this autumn across the practice so it is worth being mindful of if you still have stock out with access to oak trees. As ever, if you have cases of sudden death in your herd/flock, give us a call.

Lungworm risk on the rise
Wet weather has led to a spike in lungworm risk, particularly in first-year grazing animals-but older cattle can also be affected.
Look out for:
🐄 Coughing in groups.
🐄 Milk drop in grazing dairy cattle.
🐄 Breathing difficulty.
🐄 Weight loss or sudden death in severe cases
Lungworm can cause serious respiratory disease and even death if left untreated. Early treatment is paramount to reduce production losses. Please get in touch if you think your herd could be at risk.
