🐾 Did you know… 🐾
A research study found that approximately 80% of dogs that presented with behavioural issues had some form of undiagnosed pain that was a direct cause or adding to the problematic behaviour (Mills, 2020).
Dogs that are in pain will not necessarily present with limping or whining. You dog may:
🧠 Struggle with reactivity or anxiety
👂Be hyper-sensitive to certain sounds
🏠 Struggle to settle at home
🐕 Pull excessively on the lead
😴 Have had a change in behaviour (more lethargic, showing displacement behaviours such as hu***ng, just not seeming “themselves”)
Often, people believe that because their dog still chases after a ball, or will be excited for a walk, that they cannot be in pain. However pain and behaviour are often closely linked, and pain-related behaviour is extremely complex.
Our dogs display emotions in lots of different ways, so it’s not always easy to tell. That’s why it’s so important that we consider reactivity in a holistic way, looking at the dog’s lifestyle as well as general health. For many of my clients, there have been underlying health issues that have only been recognised after a deep-dive into the dog’s life as a whole.
