🐶 “Why does my dog do THAT?”

Why do some dogs:
🐾 Chase everything that moves?
🐾 Ignore recall when they catch a scent?
🐾 Dig holes in the garden?
🐾 Carry shoes around the house?
🐾 Learn some things instantly but struggle with others?

The answer often comes down to two things:
👉 Instinctive behaviour
👉 Learned behaviour

In our latest blog, we break down:
✔️ What behaviours dogs are born with
✔️ How breed traits influence behaviour
✔️ Why environment and life experiences matter
✔️ How dogs learn through repetition and association
✔️ Why understanding instinct can completely change your training approach

Sometimes your dog isn’t being “difficult” — they’re simply behaving like a dog. 🐾

Understanding the difference between instinct and learning helps owners build more realistic expectations, better communication, and more effective training outcomes.

What instinctive behaviour does YOUR dog show most? Let us know below 👇

Have you ever wondered why some dogs seem naturally driven to chase squirrels, herd children, dig holes, or carry toys around the house without ever being taught? At the same time, dogs can also learn incredibly complex behaviours—from waiting politely for food to walking calmly through busy envir...

🐾 “Your dog is trying to dominate you.”

This is still one of the most common pieces of dog training advice out there…
But modern behavioural science tells a very different story.

Dogs who bark, growl, react, or “misbehave” are rarely trying to control humans. More often, those behaviours are linked to:
⚠️ Fear
⚠️ Stress
⚠️ Frustration
⚠️ Confusion
⚠️ Unmet emotional needs

The goal of training shouldn’t be control through fear — it should be communication, trust, and emotional safety. 🐶

For many years, dog training has been influenced by the concept of “dominance.” You may still hear statements such as “your dog is trying to be the boss” or “you need to show them who is in charge.” These ideas remain common in general discourse, despite significant advances in our under...

🐶 “My dog knows this at home… but completely ignores me outside.”

Sound familiar?

One of the biggest reasons training “fails” isn’t because your dog is stubborn — it’s because they’re not in the right emotional state to learn.

Dogs don’t absorb information well when they’re:
❌ Overwhelmed
❌ Stressed
❌ Overexcited
❌ Anxious
❌ Too distracted by the environment

In our latest blog, we explore:
✔️ Why your dog’s emotional state matters more than the command itself
✔️ How stress affects learning and behaviour
✔️ Why timing and environment are everything in training
✔️ How confidence is built gradually — not forced
✔️ The simple shift that can completely change your training results

Sometimes the question isn’t:
“Why won’t my dog listen?”

It’s:
“Is my dog actually able to learn right now?” 🐾

🐶 Is your dog REALLY getting the right kind of exercise?

Not just a quick walk around the block…
We’re talking about the kind of exercise that supports their mental wellbeing, behaviour, confidence, and ability to actually settle at home.

Do any of these sound familiar? 👇

❌ Constant barking
❌ Chewing furniture or stealing items
❌ Zoomies at night
❌ Restlessness or pacing
❌ Struggling to switch off
❌ Overexcitement on walks

Many “behaviour problems” are actually linked to unmet or mismatched exercise needs.

In our latest blog, we break down:
✔️ Why exercise is about more than physical energy
✔️ How breed, age, and personality affect exercise needs
✔️ Why too much exercise can sometimes be just as problematic
✔️ The connection between movement, enrichment, and emotional regulation
✔️ Practical ways to meet your dog’s needs more effectively

Because a well-exercised dog isn’t just tired… they’re calmer, more balanced, and better able to cope with the world around them. 🐾

Exercise is one of the most fundamental needs in a dog’s life, yet it is also one of the most commonly misunderstood. While it is often framed simply as “a walk each day,” appropriate exercise is far more nuanced. It plays a central role in emotional regulation, behavioural stability, physical...

🐕 Thinking about getting or training an assistance dog?

There’s a lot people don’t realise about how assistance dogs actually work in the UK — including the fact that there’s no single official register or universal certification system.

Assistance dogs can absolutely change lives — but successful partnerships rely on much more than a harness and public access rights.

This blog takes an honest, evidence-based look at what good assistance dog practice should really involve. 🐾

👇 Read the full article here

Would you ever consider training your own assistance dog, or do you think this should only be done through organisations? Let’s talk 👇

Assistance dogs can be life-changing companions, offering practical support, confidence, and independence to people with a wide range of needs. But behind the harness and the calm public presence is a complex system that many people don’t realise is actually quite unregulated in the UK—and that ...

🐶 Should dogs really be working for humans?

From guide dogs and medical alert dogs to therapy and detection work, dogs play an incredible role in modern society. But it raises an important question:

👉 Are we always putting their welfare first?

Working dogs are often seen for what they do for us — but this blog looks at what we owe them in return.

It’s a fascinating read for dog lovers, trainers, and anyone interested in canine behaviour and welfare. 🐾

👇 Read the full blog here
https://www.poochwise.co.uk/post/should-we-even-have-assistance-dogs-the-ethics-behind-a-working-canine

What do you think — can working roles improve a dog’s quality of life when done ethically, or should dogs never “work” for humans at all? Let’s discuss 👇

Dogs have worked alongside humans for thousands of years, adapting their skills, instincts, and behaviour to meet a wide range of human needs. From hunting and guarding to modern detection, assistance, and therapeutic roles, working canines occupy a unique position in society—one defined by partne...

Last night’s puppy training class was such a lovely session 🐾

It’s always amazing watching owners and puppies start building strong foundations together through positive training, understanding, and communication. Training is about so much more than teaching cues — it’s about creating a happy, trusting relationship and helping dogs feel confident in the world around them.

I'm so excited to welcome more owners and their dogs into the classes and continue helping families build better relationships, happier lives, and a deeper understanding of their dog’s individual needs 💛

🚨 “Your dog is trying to dominate you.”

Ever heard that before?
The truth is… modern dog behaviour science says that idea is outdated — and believing it could actually damage your relationship with your dog. 🐶💔

Methods based on fear, intimidation, or “being the alpha” may stop behaviour in the moment, but they often create anxiety, stress, and confusion instead of real learning.

In our latest blog, we break down:
✔️ Where the dominance myth came from
✔️ Why punishment-based training can backfire
✔️ What your dog’s behaviour is REALLY telling you
✔️ Why positive, science-backed training works better

If you want a calmer, more confident dog built on trust — this is a must-read.
