This is the week when most children return to school.

Whatever the summer period has looked like for you, your furry friends may well have got used to having more people around than usual. Getting used to the quiet and perhaps being left on their own again, may cause issues with their behaviour.

Stress, anxiety and changes of routine can impact our pets as well as ourselves. If you are at all worried about your pet and how they are reacting to the 'back to school' situation, do give us a call.

We might not be able to help with any reluctance from your children to go back to school, but we can help your furry friends. Whether you wish to consider calming medication options or talking to our animal behaviourist, we will do our best to ensure that your pet is as happy as they can be.

Meet Ember, September's Pet of the Month.

Poor Ember had a painful eye condition called entropion. Common symptoms include squinting, eye discharge, redness, and pawing at the eye. Causes vary, but whatever the reason, it is very distressing for owners and pets as the eyelid rolls inward, causing fur and eyelashes to rub against the eye's surface.

Following a successful surgery carried out by our brilliant vet Claire, 4-year-old Ember can now open her eye fully again and has full vision. She is enjoying all the love and attention from her family after her operation.

If you're at all concerned about your furry friends in any way, please get in touch.

The weather forecast is looking good, so we are sure many of you will enjoy a barbecue at some point over the weekend.

Please remember that our furry friends can't always eat what we can. We know that they will try to tell you differently, with longing looks or swift snatching manoeuvres when you're not looking!

We outline some of the issues that the wrong foods can cause in our blog https://peacockvets.co.uk/can-my-pet-eat-this

If you're at all concerned that your pet has eaten something it shouldn't have, from the barbecue or otherwise, please call us as soon as possible. We have an out-of-hours vet partner who will help you if we are unavailable - just call our normal number.

Rabbits are gorgeous creatures and can make excellent furry friends, but please remember that they do need sufficient space to live in.

According to the Rabbit Welfare Association, rabbits are ideally kept in neutered pairs. They should have a permanent home measuring 10ft by 6 ft and ideally 3ft high. If it's outside, the hutch is best situated off the ground. This sized area is needed to allow them to run and jump.

Happy rabbits also binky, which is their 'happy dance'. They will jump into the air and twist their body, sometimes kicking their feet, indicating happiness and excitement. As you can imagine, this needs a fair deal of space!

If you have any questions about owning rabbits, whether as house rabbits or ones that live outside, please call in to see us.

Peacock Vets is an independent business and therefore not restricted by having to use national suppliers. We choose to utilise local businesses whenever we can.

Some specialist equipment may have to come from further afield, but we always source from local stockists, if possible. It means that we have local support and service when needed.

Having that peace of mind means that we can concentrate on giving your furry friends the love and care that they deserve, which is what we're here for!

It's not possible to include every supplier, but we have highlighted a few in our blog https://peacockvets.co.uk/why-we-support-local-businesses

In addition to us, share some of the local businesses which have provided you with excellent service or brilliant products.

Poppy is one of Peacock Vet’s fantastic receptionist team and works at the Chippenham clinic on Saturdays. She attends Hardenhuish Sixth Form in Chippenham and wants to apply to Bristol University to study Veterinary Science.

She has always wanted to be a vet and remembers playing ‘vets’ with her siblings when she was younger. Living in a household of animals – dogs, cats, chickens, rabbits and guinea pigs – she loves all animals.

She is particularly looking forward to learning more about exotic animals, and is especially interested in snakes and other reptiles.

As part of our friendly and efficient receptionist team, Poppy greets clients, manages client bookings and helps the vet team if needed.

Why not pop in to say hello and wish her well with her studies? We are hoping that once she is qualified, you’ll see her back at the practice, but this time, as a vet!

Did you know that we are an independent practice? What does this mean to you as a pet owner?

🦚 we have no corporate guidelines or sales targets to adhere to, just quality care for your furry friends.
🦚 we are owned and operated by pet-loving vets and vet nurses, not by non-veterinary investors simply wanting the best return from their money.
🦚 we have a great culture and ethos, with very low staff turnover. We are like a family, and treat your pets like we treat our own.
🦚 we have modern facilities and equipment offering the same, if not better, care for your pets.
🦚 Iris, founder of Peacock Vets, takes an active role in the practice and is available to talk to. Those heading up corporate practices are rarely involved, and often not local to the practices they invest in.
🦚 we support our local community.

If you would like to know more, please get in touch and follow our pages for regular updates and tips on pet care.

Meet Luna, the gorgeous 5-month-old French Bulldog pup.

She has been to multiple puppy parties run by Karen, our lovely Veterinary Nurse and Pet Behaviourist.

Pet parties are great to help puppies socialise with other dogs and people. Luna is lucky to have an adult dog around her to 'teach her the ropes', but puppy socialising has still been brilliant for her. Puppy parties help with basic training for you, as well as your pet, too!

Luna has attended multiple times, and we all love her - who wouldn't?

If you have a puppy, an anxious pet or one with any behavioural issues, please call us to discuss how Karen can help you and your furry friend manage the situation.

We all love our furry friends, and our last post gave some tips on keeping them cool in the heat of the sun, but don't forget other animals and wildlife whilst you're having fun.

🦚 If you're going on picnics, remember that any rubbish left behind can cause harm to wildlife. Please take your rubbish home with you.

🦚 Playing sport in the garden? Put away nets, for example, when you've finished, to avoid hedgehogs, squirrels, birds, or smaller dogs and cats getting entangled in the netting.

🦚 Wildfires can be easily started when it is so dry. Please take care and extinguish any flames fully, whether you are in the garden or away from home.

🦚 Leave some water for wildlife to drink and fill bird baths, and provide shade for wild animals as well as your pets.

🦚Let some of your lawn grow long and consider planting some wild flowers. Try to choose plants which attract pollinators.

🦚 Take care when using machinery or chemicals in the garden. (This one can help protect everyone, not just wildlife)!

There are many more tips - please add yours to the comments.

If you are keen on helping your pets, our wildlife and our planet, have you considered our unique take on care? Nature Care is available as an option with our Top Pet Club plans at no additional cost to you.

As we're due another scorcher of a weekend, here are some helpful tips to keep your pets cool:

🦚 Give them access to plenty of water and consider adding ice cubes to their bowl
🦚 They might not want to use it, but make sure you provide them with plenty of shady spots to retreat to
🦚 Use a pet-safe sun cream on exposed skin - light coloured pets may be more prone to sun damage
🦚 Damp towels to lie on can help to cool them down
🐈‍⬛ Check sheds, greenhouses or garages before closing in case an animal isn't inside (particularly cats)
🐕‍🦺 Take dogs on walks in the early morning or late evening when it's cooler
🐕‍🦺 Check the temperature of pavements - too hot to touch with your hand for 5 seconds is too hot for paws!

NEVER leave animals in a vehicle, caravan, conservatory or outbuildings - even with the windows open.

As well as the heat, there can be other dangers in your garden and the great outdoors. For more tips, read our blog: https://peacockvets.co.uk/are-there-dangers-in-my-garden-and-the-great-outdoors
