This year has been hard on our wildlife! Hedgehogs should not be out in the daytime, so when a lovely family brought us this wee man he was admitted to RVN Alex's hedgehog hospital for some TLC. Meet biscuit! 🦔🍪❤️

Is anyone else quite happy for a bit of drizzle? It means we can finally go on a decent walk with the dog!

(Or that you have the purrfect excuse to cosy up with your cat on the sofa all day)

Worth a re-post, given the weather! 🌡☀️

🥵 HEATSTROKE WARNING ⚠️

If your dog is showing ANY signs of heatstroke:
excessive panting, drooling, bright red/ pale gums, increased heart rate, lethargy, difficulty breathing, agitation, vomiting, diarrhoea, disorientation, weakness, seizures or collapse

Immediately get them WET and call your vet (our number is 0131 516 2499 ) and travel there ASAP.

By getting them WET we mean you submerge them (protecting their head) in COLD water or have running cold water (hose or repeated buckets) over them.

You will not cause shock by using water that is too cold - tepid water is NOT recommended, and neither are soaked towels (which quickly heat up and do not help). You can offer your dog some water to drink but do not try to force anything into their mouth (especially not lemon juice!)

Most importantly, stay safe - miss out your walk on hot days, or go in the early morning or late evening when it is cooler. No dog dies from missing one walk, but sadly, every year, some do from exercise-induced heatstroke. Don't be tempted to leave your dog in the car even for a few minutes.

Meet the sweetest boy Mojo who came in for a dental procedure recently.

Cats and dogs are notoriously bad at telling us they have dental pain. It often has to be something severe like a tooth fracture or infection in the bone surrounding the tooth before they stop crunching hard food or pawing their face.

It is therefore really important to have regular vet or RVN check-ups to look at the health of the teeth and gums so we can intervene at the right time. Mojo's owner did this, so we were able to correct his periodontal disease (tartar/calculus and gingivitis) with a scale and polish only.

All our dental procedures include dental x-ray so we can assess the health of the tooth below the surface. This is the only way to accurately tell if any teeth need to be extracted. Luckily, due to Mojo's prompt treatment, he did not need any extractions.

We have fixed price dental procedures, with a clear grading system* (scale and polish, minor extractions, major extractions). This fixed price includes everything your pet needs for the procedure, including nerve blocks, x-rays, intravenous fluids, and post-op pain relief.

Contact us to book your pet in for a dental check, and protect their oral health 🦷🪥 0131 516 2499

*99% of our dentals fit within these categories, but in exceptionally complex cases we may need to perform two procedures or advanced oral surgery, which we would discuss on an individual basis.

Update on our two gorgeous post-op rehabilitation girls 💗

Orla and Clementine have been recovering from major orthopedic surgery for the last couple of months - a Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO) and Medial Patellar Luxation (MPL) respectively.

We believe active rehabilitation is key to long-term recovery, so both girls are seeing our animal physiotherapists Ruth and Amanda (assisted by Cheryl) for hydrotherapy. Hydro helps strengthen their muscles tendons and ligaments, correct their gait, and regain their fitness safely. 🌊

Both girls are doing an excellent job, and we feel confident they will soon be back to leading happy, active, pain-free lives!

In sad news for Scottish wildlife, SSPCA will no longer be attending injured or distressed birds or small mammals (such as hedgehogs and bats).
At The Veterinary Wellness Centre our policy has always been that we will treat any wildlife presented to us (all funded by ourselves) to the very best of our ability. If you find an injured or unwell bird or small mammal please know that we will do our best for them.

In a quiet but seismic shift to its frontline operations, the Scottish SPCA has announced it will no longer attend incidents involving injured small birds and mammals. The move has sparked alarm among staff and animal welfare professionals, who were....

We have been helping keep beautiful Ishga healthy and active ever since we opened - she is registered patient number 002 with us 💗

Of late her regular hydrotherapy, physiotherapy, pain relief and acupuncture has not been enough in the battle against osteoarthritis.

Luckily we have more options, and she has started the process of stem cell harvest and implantation. This cutting-edge treatment offers potent anti-inflammatory and some regenerative action within the affected joints.

We will always find the best option for the individual patient, using our unique holistic caring approach. Join us in sending Ishga all our healing vibes!

Happy birthday to this beautiful boy 🎂

Sometimes, when our patients have multiple complex health issues, every birthday is an unexpected gift. Thanks to many (many!) visits to and plus very dedicated care from his owners, this reprobate has made double-digits 🥳 and is going strong.

Happy 10th birthday Oakley, carry on causing chaos and bringing a smile to every person you meet ❤️
