๐ณBeware of Acorn Toxicity ๐ณ
Acorn Toxicity, also known as oak poisoning, is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in ruminants, particularly cattle, in autumn months when they are able to consume large quantities over a short period of time.
Clinical Signs can be delayed by several days after ingestion as renal damage accumulates. Key clinical signs to watch for include:
๐ Depression and Inappetence
๐ฉ Constipation followed by Diarrhoea
๐Dehydration or sunken eyes
๐ฆFrequent Urination
๐พ Subcutaneous Oedema - Bottle Jaw
๐ฌ Colic signs - including teeth grinding, kicking at belly and restlessness.
๐ท Other signs include weakness, trembling, and a rough hair coat
Prevention
- Fence off oak trees
- Provide adequate forage
- Monitor stock closely
