Blast from the past😱.

Who used to do fancy dress at their local gymkhana?😂

This was me on my first pony 'Turbo Diesel' going Safari style. Took my mum a long time and patience to paint him. He was the best (and cheekiest😈) pony...one of those who teaches you how to ride🫣 l. He lived with me for 20 years till he went over the rainbow bridge ❤️🖤❤️

🐴🐴Regular saddle checks🐴🐴

Why are regular saddle checks important?
🐴 horses change shape - many things can influence a horses weight and shape. A few examples are the weather/time of the year, amount or changes to the work they are in, changes in environment/home, illnesses and age.

What happens if my saddle doesnt fit properly?
🐴 if a saddle doesnt fit correctly the balance will be wrong causing uneven pressure points. This in turn can cause muscular soreness.
For example, a saddle that is too wide will load more pressure to the front of it - extra weight/ pressure at the front may impede the horse's shoulders, restricting their movement and allowing them to fall on the forehand. The saddle being out of balance can also have an impact on the rider's balance - down in front may cause the rider to tip forwards and struggle to maintain a stable lower leg.

Why do saddles 'bed in'?
🐴 'bedding in' refers to the wool flocking that sits inside a panel. Each time the saddle is ridden in, the wool gradually compresses causing the panels to become flatter. Sometimes panels bed in unevenly. This may be down to asymmetry in the horse's build/shape, possibly from an injury or ailment. The rider can also influence a saddle bedding in more on one side if they are stronger down one leg, putting more weight down one stirrup. So that sideways saddle slip might not be just down to the saddle🤔.

With all the above variables that can influence how a saddle fits, this is why we say to book saddle checks at least twice a year (this is subject to the type and amount of work your horse is doing - more work/harder work = more regular checks. Youngsters who are still changing shape because they're at the beginning of their ridden education will also need more regular checks as they'll likely change shape more).

Better to be proactive than have to fix a sore back from a saddle not fitting correctly😬.

I love receiving pictures and vidoes of my wonderful clients out and about on their horses.🤗🐴🐴 Its great seeing how everyone is getting on....especially in these darker, wet days🙃.

Mr fancy pants strutting his stuff the other week😍😍.
My lovely client Kate sent me this fab pic of her gorgeous boy John riding in his new dressage saddle that i fitted the day before.

His old saddle wasn't quite sitting right and the tree shape just didn't fully suit and support him. His new saddle sits quietly and stable and allows him to move more freely through his shoulders 🤗.

If you are looking for a new saddle, head over to Saddles Direct where you can find a variety of both new and 2nd hand saddles in all shapes and sizes. If you see one (or 5😏) you like you can get them out on trial or find a saddle fitter near you 🙋🏻‍♀️🙋🏻‍♀️ who can bring them along for a fitting.

Why is it important to check your stirrup leathers?
If you're feeling uneven in the saddle/ in your stirrups its always a good idea to check that your stirrups are the same length - you'll be suprised how quickly some of them can stretch.
This can be down to a variety of things such as the quality of the stirrup leather material, the rider's weight distribution if they are stronger down one leg or perhaps theyre just old and ready for an upgrade.
This afternoon i went to check a saddle on a lovely cob who has had some time off ridden work...he has come back into work being weaker muscular down his left side which was dropping the saddle to the left. His owner had tried to counterbalance this by lengthening her right stirrup and put more weight down the right leg - this in turn has caused the right stirrup to stretch rather alot😮.

After a quick adjustment to the saddle (and stirrups😅) Riley the cob was moving much happier with a straight and stable saddle. New stirrups are now on order 😂.

So...if you feel a bit wonky in the saddle and have checked everything else, pull your stirrups off and check the lengths are still the same 😁.

NATIONAL CHAMPIONS.....amazing to hear that Sophie and the beautiful mare Esa became National Champions in their endurance competion last weekend. Sophie is always good at keeping up with her routine saddle checks as Esa is a sensitive mare. I popped out to them the week before to make sure the saddle was spot on ready for their big day. What a delight to see how well they got on.😊

Congratulations Sophie and Esa 🩵🥳🥳
