Spotlight on Equine Diastemata: What Every Horse Owner Should Know! 🐴🦷

Diastemata are gaps that form between your horse’s teeth and can trap food and debris. While common, they can cause significant problems if not managed properly, including painful gum inflammation, infections and even weight loss if left untreated.

Diastemata often go unnoticed because horses don’t always show obvious signs of discomfort. Regular dental exams can catch these sneaky gaps early and prevent long-term issues.

If you suspect your horse might have dental issues, don’t wait! Early intervention can save your horse from discomfort and keep them at their best.

❗️ Attention all horse owners ❗️

Keeping your horse’s vaccination records up to date is a legal requirement when travelling or competing.

Before your vet appointment, double-check that you have your horse’s passport on hand. Without it, the vet cannot record vaccinations, which could lead to complications or penalties down the line.

✅ Have the passport ready
✅ Schedule vaccinations on time
✅ Keep records safe and accessible

Taking these simple steps helps keep your horse safe and compliant.

Vaccination Explained: What Vaccines Do Horses Need & Why? 🐴💉

Keeping your horse healthy means protecting them from serious diseases and vaccinations are key! Here’s a quick guide to essential vaccines every horse should have:

💉 Tetanus
Caused by bacteria found in soil. Even a small wound can be dangerous. Vaccinating protects your horse from this life-threatening infection.

💉 Equine Influenza (Flu)
Highly contagious and fast-spreading. Can cause fever, coughing and lethargy. Regular flu vaccinations help keep your horse safe and prevent outbreaks.

💉 Equine Herpesvirus (EHV)
EHV can cause respiratory illness, neurological disease and even abortion in pregnant mares.

Keeping up with booster schedules is vital to maintain protection. Not sure if your horse is due? Speak to your vet, we’re happy to help.

5 Signs Your Horse Might Be in Pain 😔

Your horse can’t tell you when something’s wrong, but their behaviour and body can! Keep an eye out for these 5 warning signs:

🛑 Changes in Behaviour — Is your horse suddenly withdrawn, irritable, or unusually quiet?
🛑 Lameness or Stiffness — Favouring one leg, lame, or moving stiffly?
🛑 Loss of Appetite — Refusing food or eating less than usual?
🛑 Excessive Rolling or Restlessness — Could be signs of colic or discomfort
🛑 Sweating or Rapid Breathing — Without exercise, this can indicate pain or stress

If you notice any of these, it’s time to call your vet — early detection means we can help make your horse comfortable sooner.

🐴🍂🍁🐴

As Autumn Arrives, Watch Out for Lameness in Soft Ground!

With the cooler, wetter weather settling in, the ground gets softer and that can put extra strain on your horse’s joints and soft tissues.

Here’s what to watch for:

🟠 Joint Strain: Soft footing means more work for joints, increasing the risk of inflammation

🟤 Soft Tissue Injuries: Tendons and ligaments can get overstretched on uneven, wet ground

🟡 Hoof Health: Wet conditions soften hooves, making them more vulnerable to bruising and infections

As the seasons change, adjust your horse’s exercise and keep a close eye on their movement to keep them comfortable and sound.

Have any questions? We’re here to help!

🐴 Understanding the ACTH Test: Diagnosing PPID in Horses 🐴

The ACTH test is the primary method to diagnose PPID (Cushing’s disease). A blood sample, collected and sent to a lab under chilled conditions, analyses ACTH levels. Elevated ACTH levels beyond the normal range indicate PPID in horses.

ACTH levels vary seasonally, especially in summer and autumn. While autumn is typically recommended for testing due to these fluctuations, testing can occur year-round if a horse shows symptoms or health concerns arise.

If you have any suspicion that your horse may have PPID, then please give us a call on 01361 883742.
