So how is adolescence going? Up and down🤣

Daily routines that have been in place are now reliable✅

We are understanding more each day her preferences, motivations and reinforcers✅

We are understanding her daily fluctuations in behaviour and emotion✅

Some days she can respond to us within seconds, others within minutes, and then sometimes not at all🤦🏽‍♀️ but that’s normal and we work through it!

Yes it’s frustrating for us, however looking from her perspective:

➡️ Growing pains/discomfort

➡️ Final stages of teething

➡️ Hormonal changes

➡️ Developmental behaviour changes - increased risk taking, increased fear, decreased frustration tolerance

This is not the time to increase the difficulty of her training, this is time for more patience and really watching her body language and behaviour to understand as much as possible what she is going through and trying to communicate✅

We want her to trust us and show communication, we do not want a robotic obedient relationship.

I’ll continue to keep you updated throughout!

Fireworks can be a dreaded time for pet owners due to the effects it has on their pets behaviour.

Some pets are okay and can tolerate them.

Some pets are able to play or sleep through them.

Some pets can get frustrated and redirect onto objects.

And some pets can be fearful ranging from reluctance to engage, sitting quietly, to others violently shaking, bolting from space to space.

Here are a few management steps that may help ease the distress.

If your pet is fearful and seeks comfort from you please do not ignore them.

There is a difference emotionally between seeking comfort and seeking attention.

As always, please ensure individual management and treatment is confirmed with your pets behaviourist.

Why is the whole picture important?

There are factors I work through to help you with your pets behaviour and understand why it may be happening.

There seems to be an over-simplicity creeping in on how to deal with problem behaviour.

It is important to recognise that general advice provides a starting point of which direction to head towards, however every treatment and management technique needs to be tailored to your individual dog/cat.

I will be sharing a post on firework management next week that includes general advice, however it is caveated to ensure all support is tailored with your pets qualified clinical behaviourist/veterinary behaviourist.

I agree that training should not be difficult to understand and us professionals can help with that. However, problem behaviour (at any age) should not be over-simplified and thought of as a single element causing it.

Woodland walk with my girl❤️

We have now hit six months old, the teenage phase has begun🫣

That means reduced tolerance of things that may be frustrating, fearful, and desirable from her perspective.

It also means reduced expectation of her behaviour response time and recovery periods from my perspective.

Training still happens, consistency still happens, but things are made easier for her to learn and build associations.

There is no doubt we will both get frustrated throughout this lifestage but I will do my best to help her through her this natural part of development.

Did you experience your dogs teenage phase?

Nearly at the end of my masters degree now, and whilst my social media page has been quiet I am still aware of the continuous battle within the industry of what type of training method should be used to train your dog.

I am not posting this to get into a discussion about it, I wanted to continue to let you know what I will always strive for.

I will always have your pets welfare needs at the top of my list.

I will always try to understand the root cause of your pets behaviour.

I will not use pain, coercion, aversive tools etc. with your pets.

I will always be honest with you.

I will always listen and hear you and your pets.

I will always continue to learn about animal behaviour to provide you with high standard, ethical, and knowledgeable support.

I am only a small business, but my passion to help you with your pets and achieve this by building a trusting loving relationship is huge.

I have been laughed at for not agreeing with the use of e-collars and other aversive methods, and that’s okay. I will not subject your pets to those kinds of methods.

Animal welfare and wellbeing matters in training too.
