Subcutaneous thorns

Sometimes they sit under the skin and don’t cause a problem, at other times they can cause abscesses and swelling.

This thorn had sat under the skin for 23 months. Sweep had acquired it after a hunt race and Meisha had been monitoring carefully as he was sound. This week it decided to flare, which meant we had to get it out.

NO PAIN, CHECK AGAIN.

This lovely chap was showing no signs of oral issues but a routine dental examination picked up a large ulcer on his tongue.

Canines wee buffed and blended carefully to prevent this from happening and allow to tongue to heal.

Horses are very good at hiding pain.

The lovely Diesel recently visited the clinic for further investigations into his ongoing skin irritation.

Millie and Jess carried out intradermal skin testing to help identify potential allergens that may be contributing to Diesel’s itchiness. This procedure involves carefully injecting a panel of common allergens into the skin and monitoring the horse’s reaction over 24 hours.

By combining these results with Diesel’s clinical history, we can develop a tailored management plan and consider allergen-specific immunotherapy to help reduce his symptoms and improve his comfort.

Well done Diesel for being such a star patient during his appointment! 🌿🐴

No pain? Check again!

This case is a perfect reminder of why routine dental checks are so important. Horses are remarkably good at hiding discomfort, and even the most attentive owners may not notice a problem.

During a routine dental examination on this older mare, we discovered a fractured tooth despite her showing no obvious signs of pain. Horses are incredibly stoic when it comes to dental issues, which is why problems like this often go unnoticed.

We are hopeful she’ll feel much more comfortable moving forward. This highlights the importance of regular dental care, because unless you look inside the mouth, you simply can’t know what might be going on.

This looks set to be a fabulous evening, and may be of interest to some of our clients!

MANAGEMENT CHANGES AND COLIC

It’s been a busy weekend here at Belvoir Equine, having seen 5 colics in less than 24 hours. With the recent rain we have had, paired with yards starting to prepare for winter management, we have seen a flurry of colics.

Please be vigilant when changing to winter management strategies and introduce change as gradually as possible.

✨ SPOT THE DIFFERENCE ✨

Diastemata and periodontal disease.

Gaps between the teeth are known as diastemata and this results in food packing. The food packing can cause gingival recession, inflammation and pain.

The below photos show a 6 week difference with meticulous removal of food by picking and flushing, remedial odontoplasty (widening of the gap), and packing with material to prevent food getting stuck.

What an improvement, a big thank you to such dedicated owners as repeated visits are required to improve mouths with this condition.
