Louis and I spent a successful and enjoyable 3hrs together the other weekend which is our longest stint together so far. As his guardians left, we went straight into doing one of his favourite things, scent work! Enjoy seeing his pinpoint accuracy and indication when he finds the scent (clove) on the garden chair!
I'm looking forward to our longer stays and working towards overnight stays in the future!

Pretty Miss Penny and I enjoyed spending some time together for a trial dog sit night. It went exceptionally well and we're looking forward to a couple more stays together later this year!

Since Penny is also a pup in training with me and her guardians, I did some training with her whilst I stayed. I focused on helping her observe other dogs calmly (Mai Tai my stooge stuffy dog helped out on this one!). She's learning to master Look At That and it has worked wonders when the bin men come round! Watch this spot for more Penny features! 😍

Rover has come on leaps and bounds since starting his Training Walks 😍 he's such a smart pup and so rewarding to train because he picks things up so quickly! I don't normally post pictures of myself but Rover gives a great cuddle and I just had to capture that cute moment!

and first official Social Responsibility Walk went rather smoothly! We had a small group and took on the Embankment at a quieter time of day. We still encounter all manner of novel stimuli and triggers to work around. Each and every dog and handler team worked hard and respected each others space well. Some dogs wanted to greet and play which was a beautiful sight especially since some of these dogs were ones who were previously reactive! Well done all the teams who joined us... We can't wait for the next one!

What is 'enrichment'... The word brings to mind the multicoloured and overwhelming work of snuffle balls, snuffle mats, puzzles, feeder balls and more... And guess what... They're all great! They're fun, engaging and enjoyable for most dogs. But they come a a pretty steep cost (check or for some bargains!) and need regular maintainance and cleaning to ensure their safety.

What if we wound it back and thought about what 'enrichment' actually means... The dictionary definition is 'the action of improving or enhancing the quality or value of something.' and we can do this to our dogs lives throughout the day for totally free!

So, start hiding treats up trees and on walls ( loves this!), start doing scatter feeding at meal times, use empty loo rolls and old towels as treat dispensers, go on some pack walks, and just remember you'll be adding quality and improving a dog's day but doing these simple things for free!

Another way you can provide enrichment is by allowing sniffing/decompression time on walks as well as doing trick training or obedience on walks. For a walk that includes all of these get in touch about availability for our Training Walks today!

These are just suggestions - please consult with your trainer, vet or behaviourist to check these activities will have a positive impact on your dog's welfare first!

Rupert enjoyed a weekend dog sit with me recently and we got up to lots of fun adventures! We did a couple of our usual Training Walks, but we also went on an exciting pack walk that involved a tonne of mud, water, and 🦊💩 (thanks R 🙄😂). Naturally this was followed by a bath and later a good brush and pamper with a yak chew to keep him busy. We also went on a walk with Hazelnut where we got to do some neutrality work around some horses and each other! Safe to say he slept very well each night... As did I! 😂

This is Rover! If you've got a good memory you'll remember we dog sat for him and his brother Bob a little while back. Well, he's with us again for Training Walks! So far he's learnt he doesn't need to drag me to where he wants to go, we can just walk there calmly together. That he doesn't need to chase every bird he sees. And he's learning that maybe other dogs can be greeted politely and even be playful too! He's very intelligent and has picked things up really fast - he's a pleasure to train and take out!

How handsome is Bob!? I looked after Bob and his brother last year and got to know them really well, so I jumped at the chance to take him out for a walk the other week. He's such a good boy and loves to have a good sniff on a walk. We spotted a giant green football which I think he thought we a giant tennis ball and he stood staring at it for quite a while...!

‼️Training Walks‼️

Rupert goes on a Training Walk with me once a week. We focus on his handler engagement, response to cues, polite greetings with other dogs and people, exposure to new, novel, and busy places, trick practise and much more!

I've been visiting the handsome Louis for some time now, and we're working on him accepting me in the house and interacting with him as well as working on him being comfortable with my presence whilst his owners leave the house. He's done lots of work with and also and with the dedication and persistence of his guardians reducing his seperation anxiety is coming along marvellously. He managed 25 minutes alone with me today and offered a lie down and chin rest too!

Marvellous Myra has come to the end of her Behaviour Modification Programme recently, and she's made lots of progress over the time we've worked together! Myra is a rescue and has some issues with her eyesight, so the world is a pretty nerve wracking place for her sometimes! She's come on a great deal with her confidence in the house and when guests come in, although we're still working on her confidence outside. She's a real foodie and loves a butt scratch when she trusts you. I've been honored to be let into the small circle of people who are allowed to give scratches! See you for some top ups in the future Myra!

Little Loullie (the most stylish pup I think I've ever seen!) had a behaviour consultation the other day which was a chance for me to assess and observe behaviours which are causing her and her family some grief at the moment, and also find out alllll about her! She's a really softy (literally) and had so many kisses to give! 😍🐾

The lovely Silver has completed her Behaviour Programme and has come on a lot in the time we've worked together. She finds things in daily life quite challenging due to her tricky start in life as a rescue, however her initial reactivity towards family members has gone entirely, and her reactivity to other dogs (other than the odd one here and there - old habits die hard!) has reduced dramatically too. She's still wary of strangers coming to the house but her owners have got some exercises to be practising even after the completion of the programme. I hope to see her in the future for some top ups! 🐾❤️

and I had a lovely second walk, and took on Bedford Park together. He had a great time, got the zoomies (big time!) and played a bit of fetch with a tuggy toy. He was very relaxed and enjoyed mooching in the leaves having a good sniff! He humoured me and clambered on some tree trunks for a treat too! 😂🤩

*backdated post from Feb 24*

Stanley finished off his Behaviour Programme, and he did brilliantly in his last session! Being an ex-racing grey, he has a very high and incredibly strongly wired prey drive. We worked on alongside lots of counter conditioning and management to help him settle into his new home. I was delighted to hear that the Behaviour Programme had been 'life changing' for their family and I'm looking forward to an update from them soon!

Willow did very well in the last session of her Behaviour Programme, and proved she can now walk past other dogs, bikes, buggies, and motorbikes without reacting to them or trying to chase them. She needs to be handled with close attention currently to make sure she is successful around very big/loud triggers, but she's at the stage where actually her owner can relax and just walk past less triggering ones without needing to get Willow's attention at all! Her loose lead walking and handler engagement have come on tonnes since she started her programme. Well done team Willow! ❤️🐕‍🦺

Nb. Headcollars are not something we generally use at ABC at all, however Willow's owner was fantastic and tried lots of different things during our time together but personally they settled on the head collar and harness as the most suitable combination for them. We are always guided by canine ethics here at ABC but the owners confidence and comfort must also be met so a well conditioned headcollar and harness combination was our compromise!

I was joined with some other four legged company today, as well as a dog! 🐱🐈‍⬛ Myra continued her Behaviour Programme today and she has come on a lot over the past few months due to her pawrents commitment and consistency 👏 her confidence levels have increased in areas, and she is more engaged with all members of the household. She still has a big awoo at people when they enter the house, so today we worked on a little routine to help when people come round. Myra has some issues with her vision so whilst other senses are heightened for her, some visual things spook her a little bit! She did well learning to just chill on her bed and look at me entering the house without running at me and barking. Well done team Myra! 👏💯🐾💜

Rupert and I joined for a walk today so he could practise engagement around some new distractions and environments and to help Kathryn keep up with her brilliant fundraising for walking 10,000 steps a day for the whole of October. We had an honest and refreshing chat about mental health (and dogs, lots about dogs!) To end our adventure Rupert got a pupachino! He loved it and had fun playing with the cup afterwards too 😅

For any of my followers, especially those with dogs. Taking care of you pup can be physically tiring, all those walks and playing! Take time to look after your physical and emotional wellbeing and book in with the wonderful Kathryn for some reflexology, massage or gentle release. You won't regret it - she keeps me in one piece! 🤣🙏

Please donate if you can! Any amount is brilliant!
