🧂🐴 EQUINE SALT THERAPY – SWAN’S STORY 🐴🧂
At Hands 4 Horses Equine Rehabilitation Centre, Burgie, we believe that effective rehabilitation is about looking at the horse as a whole and providing a supportive environment where they can recover, relax and thrive.
One of the first investments we made when establishing our rehabilitation centre was our equine salt therapy system from Newmarket Equine Salt Therapy. Since then, we have welcomed horses for individual sessions as well as intensive multi-day rehabilitation stays, and we have been delighted with the positive changes we have seen.
One case we are particularly proud to share is Swan, a beautiful Warmblood who has previously been treated by us for a range of musculoskeletal issues.
Swan had also been suffering from significant recurring outbreaks of a severe skin condition resembling hives. Her owners, Lyndsey and James, had already worked extensively alongside their veterinary team to investigate the problem. Blood tests, allergy testing and swabs had been carried out, and numerous potential contributing factors had been removed — yet the underlying cause remained unclear.
Following discussions with her owners, Swan came to Hands 4 Horses for a two-week rehabilitation stay, incorporating daily equine salt therapy sessions alongside a controlled environment, consistent management and her ongoing veterinary care.
The aim was not to claim a miracle cure, but to provide Swan with an additional supportive therapy while her owners and veterinary team continued to investigate the underlying problem.
📸 The photographs tell the story.
Although salt therapy has not completely resolved Swan’s skin condition, the improvement in the appearance and overall condition of her skin has been extremely encouraging.
After two weeks with us, Swan was in a much better position to return home and continue her rehabilitation and management alongside her owners and veterinary team.
We are incredibly grateful to Lyndsey and James for trusting us with their beautiful mare and allowing us to share her journey.
Cases like Swan’s demonstrate why we believe that rehabilitation should be individualised to the horse. Every horse is different, and sometimes combining appropriate veterinary care with supportive therapies and careful day-to-day management can make a meaningful difference.
