💔 Charlie Update – Urgent Appeal 💔

Sadly, this isn’t the good news we were hoping for this morning.

Charlie’s incredible foster family sensed something wasn’t right and rushed him to the vet as an emergency. After scans and assessments, the update was worse than we feared: something had gone seriously wrong internally.

We were told he would need urgent surgery—likely costing between £4,000–£5,000—depending on how much of the abdominal wall needed repairing and how long he’d need to stay. The vet kindly offered us the best price she could.

Despite the cost, we gave the go-ahead—because Charlie deserves every chance. He’s stolen all our hearts. 💛

After a tense wait, we got the call—Charlie underwent over three hours of surgery, followed by more than an hour in recovery. A section of his bowel had to be removed. The material he ingested had acted like a cheese wire, slicing through part of his intestine. The vet also had to repair damage within his abdomen.

This type of injury is rarely seen in dogs—more common in cats who’ve eaten thread or cotton—but Charlie’s case was severe. The original vet couldn’t have known how much internal damage there was.

💥 The next 3–4 days are critical. 💥

Please send Charlie all your healing thoughts. He’s fighting for his life, and we are doing absolutely everything possible to help him recover.

The first operation was covered by your amazing donations. Now, we’re asking for help again to raise funds for this unexpected, life-saving surgery.

No negative comments, please—just hope, love, and support. His foster family and vets have gone above and beyond for him.

We’ll keep you updated every step of the way.

🐾 With hope,
The Labradors in Need Team

Lifesaving tip for when your dog swallows something sharp:

Not long ago, my dog accidentally swallowed a thumbtack during our walk. I panicked and called the vet right away. She told me that for sharp objects, it’s best not to induce vomiting as it could harm their esophagus on the way back up. Instead, it’s recommended to let it pass naturally. The vet advised me to feed my dog lots and lots of bread, ideally slathered in olive oil. This way, the thumbtack would hopefully get packed inside the bread and pass through her system safely!

I followed her advice, and my dog thought it was the best day ever (haha). The vet said to keep an eye on her behavior and ensure she was eating and drinking normally without any visible discomfort. It should pass within about 24 hours. Of course, if anything seemed off, I could take her to the vet immediately.

And sure enough, almost exactly 24 hours later, the thumbtack came out encased in her p**p! Here’s a picture of the thumbtack alongside the dog in question.

I just wanted to share this tip in case anyone finds themselves in a similar situation! Hope this helps.

TLDR: If your dog swallows a sharp object, feed them a ton of bread with olive oil right away.

🐾 Sally’s Story: The Urgent Need for Pet-Friendly Accommodation 🏠💙

Sally and her owner found themselves homeless, with nowhere safe to go together. While waiting for a pet-friendly hostel, they were forced to sleep on the streets—where Sally injured her paw. 💔

Thanks to a referral from Greater Manchester Police, we arranged a vet appointment to get Sally the care she needed. Soon after, a space became available at a Dog Champion Scheme hostel, giving them both a safe place to stay. Sally received further vet care, a new harness, treats, and a toy—small comforts that meant the world. 🐶🎾

Now, Sally and her owner are feeling hopeful about their future and moving towards a permanent home. But too many pet owners still face impossible choices because of limited pet-friendly accommodation. We need more hostels to welcome people and their pets.

🐾💙 April is Stress Awareness Month – Let’s Talk About the Power of Pets! 💙🐾

Life can be overwhelming, but did you know that pets have a proven ability to reduce stress and improve mental well-being? 🐶🐱 The companionship, love, and sense of purpose they provide can make a world of difference—especially for those facing homelessness.

For many people experiencing homelessness, their pets are their lifeline. They offer comfort, emotional support, and a reason to keep going, even in the hardest times. That’s why Street Paws works to keep people and their pets together, providing veterinary care and helping hostels become pet-friendly.

💙 This Stress Awareness Month, let’s recognise the power of pets in supporting mental health. Share a picture of your pet and how they help you de-stress in the comments! 🐾👇
