Autumn Equinox 🧣🍁🪵🕯️🧸🍂

The autumn equinox falls on Monday 22nd September and marks the start of autumn, when day and night are equal. It's a seasonal shift that can affect your pet's routine, energy levels and outdoor habits.

How does the autumn equinox affect your pet?🐶🐱

As the seasons shift, your dog might enjoy longer walks in the cooler weather. While you're out and about, keep an eye out for seasonal hazards like mushrooms, antifreeze and ticks.

Cats, on the other hand, may start spending more time indoors, seeking warmth and comfort. With less outdoor roaming, it's important to keep them mentally stimulated: think cosy hideouts, interactive toys or window perches to watch the falling leaves. 🍂

Autumn Pet Toxins: Acorns

Acorns are also a choking hazard and can cause intestinal damage if ingested whole. Signs of acorn poisoning to look for include vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain and dehydration. In rare cases, untreated incidents of acorn poisoning have led to kidney and liver failure, so always speak to your vet as soon as possible if you suspect your pet has ingested acorns.

Autumn Pet Toxins: Horse Chestnuts (conkers)🌰

The toxic ingredient in conkers is also found in the leaves and bark of the tree, so keep an eye out to make sure your pet doesn't eat these either.

Conkers are also a choking hazard, and can potentially cause bowel obstructions if swallowed whole, which may require emergency surgery.

Signs to look for in your pet include vomiting and diarrhoea, excessive drooling excessive thirst or reduced appetite. In severe cases, ingestion can cause muscle tremors or seizures.
