"Don't worry, he's friendly" isn't a recall command.

After recently experiencing an incident whilst walking a reactive dog on lead, I wanted to highlight the importance of two things:

• Your off lead dog shouldn't be approaching dogs that are on lead.

• If your dog does not have reliable recall, they shouldn't be off lead.

A dog may be on lead for many reasons. They may be reactive, nervous, in training, recovering from surgery, elderly, injured, or simply not want to interact with other dogs.

Whether your dog is friendly or not is irrelevant. Responsible dog ownership means having control of your dog at all times to keep dogs, owners and members of the public safe.

Not every dog wants to say hello, and that's absolutely okay.

We all have the right to enjoy the same walking spaces. By respecting other dogs' boundaries, using reliable recall, and keeping our dogs under control, we can help make walks safer and more enjoyable for everyone.

So don't be part of the "Don't worry he's friendly" crew.

A client of mine recently had an off-lead dog run straight up to their reactive dog, who was on lead. The owner offered no apology and had no recall on their dog. Their response? “He’s just a puppy”, “He’s friendly.”

And it got us talking about the lack of education and awareness from some owners.

A dog being on lead doesn’t automatically mean they want to interact. There are countless reasons a dog may be on lead:
- They’re reactive.
- They’re in training.
- They’re recovering from an injury.
- They’re a rescue adjusting to a new environment.
- Their owner is simply making a sensible choice.
- Literally any other reason... 😅

Whether your dog is friendly or not is irrelevant if you can’t call them away or keep them under control.

Not every dog wants to say hello, and they shouldn’t have to. Even two friendly dogs can have a negative interaction depending on the situation. There is no need for two dogs who have never met to greet each other on a walk, especially when they’re unlikely to ever see one another again.

Good dog ownership isn’t just about having a sociable dog. It’s about reading the situation, respecting other owners, and making sure your dog doesn’t become someone else’s problem.

✨My first Dog Socialisation Group✨

This is completely free and is open to anyone who would like a safe, controlled environment to work on their dog's training.

Just to be clear, I am not a dog trainer and this is not a training class. The aim is simply to provide a space where owners can proof behaviours they're already working on and train alongside like minded people.

I've tried to choose a location that offers plenty of space for everyone. There's a gravel track, a small car park, and lots of room to spread out and work at your dog's individual level.

If your dog is finding things difficult or becoming overwhelmed, there is plenty of space to create distance, decompress and enjoy the environment while still being part of the group.

I hope this can become a supportive, judgement-free space for owners and dogs of all abilities.

From 1st July, my services will be moving to a new structure designed to provide more value, consistency and better support for clients.
These changes reflect increased experience, ongoing education, rising business costs and the quality of service I strive to provide.
As part of this update, there will be some changes to my service offerings and pricing structure.
These changes will allow me to streamline my services, create greater availability, and continue growing the business while maintaining the high standard of care and support that my clients and their dogs receive.

I had the pleasure of looking after this handsome boy for a whole week. He is currently working with on a behaviour modification programme and Ecollar conditioning.
Throughout the week, we followed the training plan provided by Gem and worked hard to maintain consistency with his routine and expectations. When Dudley's owners returned home, they could clearly see the progress he'd made over the week, which was fantastic to see!
Such a lovely review to receive, and I hope this boy continues to excel in his training journey. 😍

⚠️ Tick Season Reminder ⚠️

I’ve noticed quite a few ticks on dogs during walks recently, so please remember to check your dog regularly.

As always, I’ll do visual checks where possible during walks, but ticks can be easily missed, so a full check at home is still really important.

If you do use tick prevention, this is just a little reminder to make sure it’s all up to date 🐾
