Here’s how to help your horse breathe easier this winter:

•𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 — fresh air
without drafts is key.
• 𝐆𝐨 𝐥𝐨𝐰-𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭— steam/soak hay and use dust-extracted bedding.
•𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐭 — reduces exposure to stable dust and allergens.
•𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥 𝐦𝐨𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 — dehumidifiers help limit mould and improve air quality.

Work starting 9pm tonight until the 1st of December ‼️

🚧 Amey, on behalf of Transport Scotland, is undertaking essential resurfacing on the A77 at Bellfield Roundabout from Friday 21st November until Monday 1st December 2025 in various phases.

⛔️ This work will require daytime single lane closures between 6am and 8pm and overnight carriageway closures between 8pm and 6am across multiple phases. Closures will affect the A77 southbound and northbound on and off-slips, and the A71 eastbound and westbound at Bellfield. Delays of up to 45 minutes are expected during daytime works on Saturday 22nd, Sunday 23rd, Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th November.

🗺️ Signed diversion routes will be in place via the A77, B730, B7038, A735, A76, A719, and local roads depending on the phase of work. Expected delays range from 2 to 12 minutes depending on route and traffic conditions.

🚦 All traffic management will be removed by 6am on Monday 1st December.

Bacteria and microbes produce heat when fermenting fibre in the hind gut.
✅𝘾𝙝𝙚𝙘𝙠 𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙘 𝙬𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙗𝙪𝙘𝙠𝙚𝙩𝙨 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙘𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙠𝙨.
Plastic is more likely to cracking in low temperatures. Rubber buckets may be a better option.
✅𝙆𝙚𝙚𝙥 𝙬𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙨𝙪𝙥𝙥𝙡𝙮 𝙬𝙖𝙧𝙢. Horses can reduce their water intake in cold weather.
Topping up their water with hot water & insulating buckets to reduce freezing helps.
✅𝘽𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙠 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙧𝙚𝙢𝙤𝙫𝙚 𝙞𝙘𝙚 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙬𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙩𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝𝙨.
Placing apples or plastic balls in troughs can sometimes help against them refreezing.
✅ 𝘼𝙧𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙬𝙖𝙧𝙢 𝙚𝙣𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝? Check how warm they are under their rug, and consider a heavier rug for a clipped, aged or fine haired coat. A full natural winter hair coat provides excellent insulation without rugging.
✅𝘼𝙫𝙤𝙞𝙙 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙘𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙢𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩. Movement improves gut motility, which in turn reduces the risk of impaction colics.
Soaking feeds and a sloppy mash can improve water intake & gut motility.
✅ 𝙂𝙧𝙞𝙩 𝙬𝙖𝙡𝙠𝙬𝙖𝙮𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙥𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙨 - ice can catch us all out. Always check your route before leaving the stables, gritting or using old bedding to cover slippy areas can reduce slipping and injury to you or your horse.

November is Senior Pet Month. Many of you will have cared for a senior pet at some point in your life, whether it was a horse, dog, cat, rabbit, hamster, or something more adventurous, so will know they can require a lot more care as they get older. Like humans, pets can suffer from age related problems with their hearing, sight, eating/teeth/diet, mobility/joints/exercise, and memory. A condition that we commonly see at Thistle Equine Referrals is Osteoarthritis, which you can see in the image here, indicated by the blurred, irregular bone compared to the other image with nice neat lines. Other conditions that can be seen in older horses include an increased risk of colic, PPID (Cushings disease), and melanomas. Advice on caring for older horses can be found on lots of the equine charity pages, along with quality of life and end of life advice.
