SNOOT 🐶
Did you know....
🐾 The slit in the middle of your dogs nose is called a Philtrum, it carries moisture from your dogs mouth to the large area of the nose known as the Rhinarium
🐾 This moisture causing our dogs noses to be wet helps facilitate the absorption of volatile chemicals to enhance their sense of smell
🐾 They have around 300 million olfactory receptors compared to our mere 6 million
🐾 Their sense of smell is at least 10,000 X better than ours
🐾 They can move their nostrils independently
🐾 They can sniff out many types of cancer, alert an owner to rapidly dropping sugar levels and sniff out invasive plant species to aid conservation efforts.
How amazing is that!
Its no suprise that scent work is great mental stimulation for our dogs, using their powerful natural assets.
Simple ways to get their nose working and provide an appropriate outlet for a natural doggie behaviour include hiding treats or kibble (from their daily allowance) around the room and asking your dog to ‘find it’.
Scatter feeding your dogs dinner in the garden or across a rug or a snuffle mat to sniff out.
Or even if you have some cones or equivalent, playing the ‘find it’ game in a more localised way but cant see the treats directly, allowing them to have it when they hover over the area. You can make this harder by hiding the treats out of view of your dog and then bringing them in the room to find!
Let’s harness and fall in love with the power of their noses!
