Thank you to Helen Gilbert, Paul Johnston and a lovely lady, Linda who came along to help litter pick at both Whitburn and Seaburn beaches after work today. A total of 11 bags of litter cleared.
Litter on our beaches, especially in lovely weather is sadly, historically an ongoing problem. Today, we met some lovely folks who had brought a bag with them and said they would take their litter away when they left. Others gratefully accepted the bin liners I offered them. A handful were cheeky and some asked if we got paid to do it. In short, no, we don't get paid. Like many others we volunteer because it saddens us to see our wildlife eating rubbish and saddens us to picnic near discarded diapers, empty vans, broken bottles and wet socks and dirty un**es.
To think of that rubbish getting taken into the sea in the next incoming tide, or to swim with trash....there is no need...it's easy to despair and throw up our hands or pass the blame....or we can get involved.
Be an advocate for the planet by doing what you can around your home, just, do something.....
Our next organised volunteer clean is at Roker on 7th September. We will meet at the pier entrance at 11am and equipment is provided. Have a good weekend all

Hello folks...thanks to the lovely volunteers who came along to help at this morning's Animals Asia North East UK support group Big Bear beach clean. It was great to see friendly people, dogs and even meet a few visitors from out of town on the beach today. Sadly we did clear 10 bags of litter, from both sides of the pier, (3 bags alone) of fishing litter from near the 'prohibited' area by the yatch club, lots of harmful monofilament carelessly left on the ramp when there's so many birds in the water.

There appears to be heaps of cans and other rubbish dumped behind the prohibited area where fisherman are clearly climbing the fences over to fish. Kirsty and I managed to use our pickers to 'fish' some out between the gaps, but its needing a proper clean with legal access.

There was also quite a lot trapped in the rocks near Harbour view carpark. A while back, I'd arranged with our local council to get ANLRS fishing gear recycle pipes up in Sunderland. It's disheartening to see that whilst some are using the pipes responsibly, others are shoving rubbish and dog foul bags in....I avoid posts like these as social media is noisy enough as is, but this is not civilised behaviour. We simply must do better, for wildlife, for the environment for our children, and future.

To help Animals Asia I am auctioning my painting called "Sunset", 40 x40cm mounted canvas, inspired by a bear called Fern.
This sweet bear, was captured as a little cub and spent 21 years in a bile farm cage until finally rescued. Bearing the scars from a life of torture, Fern, currently lives in peace and safety at our Animals Asia bear sanctuary.
Funds from "Sunset" will be to help bears that suffer the same plight as Fern.

The latest bid on my page is £55 from Vanessa Black.
