Coco is in foster with us here through Spaniel Rescue Foundation. She’s been used for breeding but today no more, she’s been spayed . Speedy recovery Coco ❤️

Today is VE Day (Victory in Europe) where we mark 80 years since the end of the Second World War.

While we remember the service and sacrifice of the men and women who defended the freedoms we enjoy today, did you know spaniels played a role in the war effort?

Cocker spaniels and springer spaniels in particular were employed in a variety of roles. These included sentry duty, message delivery and search and rescue, where they played an invaluable role in locating survivors under the rubble after bombing raids. Spaniels also put their incredible sense of smell to use as explosive detector dogs.

Alongside this active duty spaniels were employed as beloved mascots for RAF air squadrons and even accompanied their owners on bombing raids. A cocker spaniel called Michael regularly accompanied his owner, Squadron Leader Harry Budden on sorties, owning him the epithet 'The Flying Spaniel'.

Today we remember them.
